This is the first book I've read from the more recent Cervantes Prize winner and I can tell you that it was fascinating:
Luys Forest is an old writer who was part of the regime. He lives in Calafell, a beach town near Barcelona, away from the modern life, trying to write his memoirs in complete solitude. The story starts when Mariana, his niece, appears into his life. She represents the wild force of the youth, the excess in everything: drinking, drugs, sex. She is sent with her Uncle by Forest's sister in law from Barcelona, so she can calm down and get a more quiet life in Calafell. Mariana, with a strong sexual force in all her acts, helps Forest to type his memoirs, going around everything that the writer draws. However, reality is not what it seems to be, since what Forest is trying to picture is not what "really" happened in his life, but whatever he wanted to happen. This way he starts to fix little details in his life, changing them, creating a sort of fiction of his own experience. But when she speaks with Mariana, he usually tells the truth of what happened, and this way the books keeps telling in spiderwebs what appears to be real, and what isn't. At the end, a revealing truth appears from all this, twisting the story and the life of Forest forever. An amazing book,of what it seems to be an fabulous writer. I'll keep searching for more of his novels, but right now he deserves it ![]() |

As far as I can tell there's only two Juan Mars? novels available in English: Shanghai Nights and Lizard Tails. The Literary Saloon recently mentioned that these were only available in the UK, with nothing available in the US.
