Adaorardor,
The only Schnitzler I've read was one of his plays. I believe it was perhaps Liebelei (Playing with Love), but because I cannot find the book it was in at this time, I'm not sure. I did see the French film, "La Ronde," which was based on Schnitzler's play, Reigen (Merry-Go-Round). It's a tantalizing souffle of a film, exquisite in every way. Directed by the great Max Ophuls and starring a glittering cast--Danielle Darrieux, Simone Signoret, Anton Walbrook, the handsome Gerard Phillipe (of Devil in the Flesh fame), and many more intriguing (mostly French) stars. I'm sorry I cannot be of more help regarding The Road into the Open. I do know this 1908 novel concerns the position of Jews in Austria. Perhaps someone else has some enlightening comments about the book? ~Titania |

I love Schnitzler - try his Fraeulein Else for the supreme portrayal of a female mind penned by a male.
I didn't know "Der Weg ins Freie" had been translated, but now that I do, it is a must read. I'll just add it to the worldliteratureforum wishlist. Pushkin Press do a good line in Schnitzler titles. I reviewed two of them (including Fraeulein Else) here. |

Thanks, Lizzy. Fraeulein Else sounds wonderful. I'm so glad you recommended it.
By the way, your site is fab-u-lous. When I have a chance, I will check out the Schnitzler reviews you mention, also. Thank goodness for Pushkin Press. I must add to my Schnitzler collection! Best, Titania "Happiness if rarely absent. It is we that know not of its presence." ~Maurice Maeterlinck |
