I read, about year ago, her apocalyptic (sorta) novel The Flood and I love it. I am not altogether sure if it would survive a second reading but I know I will reread it. A curious book, weak and string sentences thrown together, small of scope inasmuch as for a large portion of the book, it's a better sort of soap opera, many different characters in some western city, rich people, poor people, their worries, loves...blabla...and above all this looms war, catastrophe and religious fanatism. The end has overwhelmed me. The whole book falls into place. But, while reading, I always had the nagging feeling that something wasn't quite right with the book. I am considering the possibility that I was tricked into liking this book, which could really be a very bad book. I don't know.
As it is, I love it and I will read more of Maggie Gee's novels and will most certainly rerread The Flood sometime soon. It's a singular novel, by, most likely, a singular writer. |
