Default 'residencia'
Always have your E111 with you in order to have treatment all over Europe.

Ken,

I think you are correct in your assumption. Routine operations and treatment will be done in Spain but you will need to get the appropriate forms from Newcastle to transfer you to the Spanish system. Others on this forum who have already done it will no doubt be able to advise.

I believe that if you have 'residentia' then you should apply for your EHIC (has replaced E111) from the Spanish authorities and can then use it to get EMERGENCY treatment when you are back in Britain or in any other EU country.

Having said that, I doubt whether a British A & E department will bother to ask you for it.

As Keith says, from Jan 1st this year, the E111 has been replaced by the EHIC.

You can apply for the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) from http://www.dh.gov.uk/PolicyAndGuidan...avellers/fs/en

The EHIC is only for residents of the UK etc for treatment whilst abroad on holiday

Hope this helps

I have also heard that in Valencia only that if you are a person of independant means (take early retirement etc.) and are not of Spanish retirment age, but are a resident, that you can have medical treatment free of charge. Is this correct?

E111's are longer available as of Jan 1st this year, what Chris means is the new EHIC which is credit card size.

I've been a Spanish resident with Residencia for years. I do, however, go to the doctor in the UK.

I'm not sure what the official way of doing things is, but I've never had any problems, even though the GP I visit knows I live abroad, and the outpatient clinic actually worked my appointments round my availability and flights!!

When I visit the GP I just sign a form to say I'm a visitor to that surgery. I offered Nat Ins number at the hospital and before visiting, asked if I had to try and lay my hands on my Medical Card. Neither were needed.

I must say that it really is comforting to receive top quality medical care, knowing that it's available and not having to worry how much of a dent it's going to make on the wallet.

BTW, booked a holiday recently, with insurance included. Even though I'm a Spanish resident, if anything happens, I get re-patriated to UK for medical attention!
