into Alicante - a place which we both love and enjoy - on 24th of June this year to enjoy the Hogueras. Our holiday had been planned around the event. We set off from GA at @7.30pm - then had to queue for an hour to get into a car park (the underground one near the end of the 'Dog Walk'). The ENTIRE N332 was closed opposite the Port area and was used as a pedestrain footpath for the whole night. Every restaurant and Bar up the whole length of the Esplanada Espana and around the Port seemed to have employed their own live band on large stages. Restaurants were all full to overflowing and prices had mysteriously increased we noted ! IT WAS TOTAL CHAOS ! Some say that over 250,000 people were in the Port and Playa area that night. Most of them trod on my feet. The model fires burnt - one by one - heralded by loud fireworks. It felt surreal as the Gran Sol Hotel looked to be on fire - only to realise that it was yet another WONDERFUL 'model' - that took a year to produce - was going up in smoke. To top it all off a Police Helicopter spent most of the evening hovering loudly above the Port area - nearly drove us crazy.
It was an experience - but not one that we'll probably ever repeat. We can say that we've 'done it' but on reflection we simply felt intimidated by the incredibly huge crowd and were really glad to get back to the safety of GA. We arrived on June 22nd and left on July 2nd and there were spectacular fireworks EVERY night during that period. Don't worry. You won't miss anything. By the way the 'Fallas' which are similar to the Hogueras in Alicante take place earlier in the year in Valencia and are supposedly the biggest and best in Spain. We love Spain and the Spanish people - but if you go to the Hogueras ... be prepared ! |

The "crema" or burning of the effigies takes place on the 24th of June, though they are set in place a few days before this, so you can wander round the city looking at them (all 82 this year).
If you cant make this date,or even if you can, there is a selection and history in "El Museo de Las Fiestas" in the Rambla (avenue) next to the tourist information office. bippy |
