Howard Webb's alright, in fact, he was lenient to Holland's De Jong for not sending him off when he justifiably could. The only glaring mistake was awarding a Spanish goalkick instead of a Dutch corner in extra time, but that's more of this assistant's mistake for flagging the Spanish way.
As for the 9 yellow cards and 1 red card against Holland, it was obvious that Holland was trying to stifle the Spanish and provoke retaliation for a Spanish send-off by rotating players to foul them at tactical moments. Ironically, another new version of total football. The whole team got almost totally booked! |

Ironically, another new version of total football. The whole team got almost totally booked! The 14 yellow cards, one leading to a red, was a record for a World Cup final, beating the six collected by Argentina and West Germany players in 1986. Eight different Dutchmen were booked, five from Spain. -- AP |
