Default Probably not going to see "Sherlock Holmes"
The AV Club liked it, and more often than not, I tend to agree with their recommendations. (Genevieve's stance on Ghostbusters notwithstanding.)

There were occasional action scenes in the old Holmes stories, along with prodigious drug use. I think they're emphasizing the action because a movie about a guy who sniffs coke, plays violin, and reads the paper would be pretty dull.

Agreeing with hipsters...
I'd rather agree with hipster douchebags than agree with a Nebr*******. :wiglaf:

If I liked RDJ any more than I do, I would have to abandon all claims to even nominal heterosexuality.
The dude is just ****ing sexy.

When you come out as a holmesexual let us know, and we can make it a celebration.

The only December movie I'm likely to see first-run.

Hey, did you guys know that they already published the novelization of this move? Is this Doyle dude a good writer? I might wait to see the movie first before I read this adaptation.

Probably see it on Boxing Day. Looking forward to it, despite the fact that they seem to have turned SH in the aforementioned superhero badass...

I've never read the stories, I just know they're not about some dude who blows **** up all across London. Those commercials look ridiculous. Now, it's possible they made a decent movie and just screwed up on the ad campaign...

MrFun, I'm referring to coolness, not hotness--totally different things. If this were genuinely sexual, I would probably be cooing over one of those Twilight smegs or something.

Detective stories don't much interest me...which, I just realized, makes my objection all the more retarded, but I'm mostly annoyed by the idea of utter disrespect for an author and his material. Anyway, I don't care whodunnit. I know somebody dunnit, and I'm confident that the CSI team/Nero Wolfe/Sherlock Holmes will figure out who in the end, but in the meantime, meh.

The only ACD stories I've read are the Challenger ones, which I liked except for the idiotic one attempting to justify Doyle's nutty seance beliefs.

Apparently it's less awesome than smoking cocaine, but better than snorting.

+2, I guess. Like Elok and MrFun, I've never read the stories. But I just started reading some (free ebooks on the Kindle, FTW!)

In those days cocaine was more likely to be used intravenously or orally. Holmes uses a 7% solution. I just thought I'd point that out .
They make a reference in the movie to Holmes drinking "stuff used for eye surgery." That's probably what it was.

I love the way all the complaints are about this movine being un-Conan Doylish, yet the totally Conan Doylish story-turn is also denounced.

I've decided I'm going to go see it, mostly because I like the cast. Yes, I, too, am gay for RDJr.

It was meh.

The twist was... well, not a twist, given that Doyle used one exactly like it about fifteen times. And the rest of the movie was just kind of not-Sherlock-Holmesey.
Boo hiss, throw him out.

It's legitimate to call out a story for mainly borrowing the parts of a work that weren't interesting.

I'm confused. Aside from the yay and the plot twists, what was interesting about the stories?

I doubt that Downey's Sherlock Holmes has as much reasoning and gravitas as Lt. Cmdr. Data's Sherlock Holmes.

That said, it sounds like all of you are total fags when it comes to RD Jr.

I understand that he gets shirtless in this movie.
