I'll stop being an ass. To answer your OP honestly, Ozzy is right. When people think of Russia the popular image is forest and tundra, not steppe. This image was reinforced thanks to the scenery of famous historical movies like Dr. Doctor Zhivago and Nicholas and Alexandra.
