Default What's wrong with this picture (non-Canadians only)
There seems to be an extra guy?

Not necessarily. Could have pulled the goalie. Don't know what happened in that game. My problems:

1) We're losing
2) The high defenseman should actually be at the point in order to cycle the puck to the guy in the left circle (left from our perspective, right from goalie's)
3) Nobody's covering that guy in the left circle. They've taken away the direct passing lane, but there would be a cycle available if aforementioned defenceman wasn't retarded.

EDIT: oh, crap, didn't scroll over to see the 7th man.

To be fair, it's expecting a bit much for refs to be able to count past 5

I saw some 4 on 3 hockey on Monday, during OT. That was fun. Ice was empty as hell.

That would be some record keeping.

One of the 6 is the goaltender. Generally we mean skaters when we talk about strength on ice.

And they didn't even get caught.
Reminds me of when the Penguins (I think? Or was it the Ducks?) had six skaters on the ice for about thirty seconds in the Finals last season and didn't get caught. I was screaming at the TV.

Looks like 7 on 6 to me. Still
What KH said, but also, count the white jerseys. I only see five... it wasn't a powerplay, so the sixth is probably just off ice, but that's odd for defense against greater numbers (penalty kill etc.) - typically you keep your players in more tightly to be able to be between the opposing skaters and the goal for blocking purposes...

I think one of the defensemen looks like they're on top of the goaltender. He's there.

Look at the goaltender's crease more carefully...

Maybe Newcastle could do better under those conditions.
