depending on the crime to be prevented, everything is justifiable in theory, but few torture methods net any gain in practice since subject usually ends up lying. encouraging suspects to confess crimes they did not commit by torture is not part of a rational society.

in the USA, the whole national debate (omfg we must torture teh terrorists but liberal cowards oppose) was a wedge issue presented in form of a false dilemma
