Default Should I be outraged?
Didn't read it. But being outraged preemptively can be nice :Wiglaf:

Those body bags are probably infected with smallpox.

Imagine if that happened in the US. Glenn Beck would assume that they government was running death camps. And Sloww, Ben, and TMM would believe him.

The Opposition is all over this one. I'm finding it bizarre.

We don't have the idiocy of Limbaugh or Beck or anything approaching it.

The Minister says we are going to "get to the bottom of it". Bottom of what?

Leona Aglukkaq says she's offended both as Health Minister and an aboriginal Canadian that her department delivered body bags to native communities as a way of dealing with H1N1 flu pandemic.

Calling the incident “insensitive and offensive,” Ms. Aglukkaq pledged to get to the bottom of the issue.

“I was born and raised in remote communities and I understand the challenges better than anyone – that's why I have met frequently with First Nations organizations,” she said in a statement released this morning. “Anyone suggesting that our government's solution to H1N1 is body bags is sensationalizing this situation.”

However, her statement fell short of a personal apology, something that Michael Ignatieff was demanding Thursday morning.

The Liberal Leader accused the government of being insensitive, saying its message is simple: “We expect aboriginal Canadians to die.”

Mr. Ignatieff is outraged over the government's handling of the H1N1 crisis, especially the latest controversy in aboriginal communities. He called the decision to send body bags to at Manitoba reserve “callous.”

“It sends a message that simply says we expect aboriginal Canadians to die and when it's combined with the fact … that they haven't sent preventative measures that can save those lives, it sends a message of callous of lack compassion,” Mr. Ignatieff said to reporters in an unusual morning scrum.

“I am genuinely shocked.”

Have we gone absolutely PC crazy?

My take is just like yours-- If body bags are part of larger shipments, wouldn't that be expected and usual. Would not body bags be part of shipments around the country on a regular basis? I once saw the aftermath of a "jumper" off a nearby building-- The ambulance had a body bag-- how shocking
Larger and/or more centralized communities would have body bags and storage for corpses already available.

In remote places you might even need to stick up some more!!

Exactly. They are expected to be needed. People will die across the country if the worst fears are true. I'll be curious to hear how many communities offended by these preparations actually send the body bags back.

Even if body bags were sent I doubt that you can pin that on the Conservatives-- Is the minister supposed to know the contents of supply packages sent around the country??

Of course not.

Tempest-- meet teapot -- I think any politico that goes after this is an idiot

Let the idiot parade begin. I predict >200 of them are about to engage in an orgy of public outrage.

edit - Sorry. How many CPC's are there? 305 - CPC

Sure, but again it's a matter of scale. A remote community may have a few available at all times (to deal with the tragic fires) but they will need to have extra this year to handle expected flu deaths in addition to the usual.

I imagine the availability of larger/centralized areas is much better as they will have more already on hand or be able to easily access more from elsewhere on short notice if required. i.e. I would be surprised to hear Toronto is getting an extra shipment of body bags.

The pussification of America Canada continues.

Seriously, in a flu outbreak/epidemic, aren't body bags a pretty important element of preventing or mitigating the spread of the flu from improper handling of anyone who has died from it?

A poster at the Globe:

"The health minister is right to call an inquiry - the body bags were meant for liberal/NDP/Bloc ridings only. "

It's no win for the government. If they did nothing and a bunch of people died and were rotting up there people would be screaming about why body bags weren't sent up in anticipation.

People ***** cause they like to hear themselves *****.
