Based on some reviews I've read, they definitely depart from ST cannon. I'm fine with that, so long as it's fun & I like the characters.

The awfulness of the SW prequels came down to putting (bad) plot and special effects over characterization (not to mention casting).

Abrams has been pretty clear that he wouldn't be overly concerned with canon. His stuff usually has some plotting, half-decent dialog, and good production values. So I might actually see this one.
