What's your chipset? (Intel 915?965?)

Have you tried to force the processor to be kept at low speed?

Are you able to monitor the temp?

Edit: Does it freeze in Windows? Or directly after start up?

Have you tried to force the processor to be kept at low speed? I've never done that before. It's not overclocked or anything.

Are you able to monitor the temp? The temperature seems to be fine. It was left to cool all day today, and the problems remain, so I don't believe it's heat which is still responsible for the problems.

Edit: Does it freeze in Windows? Or directly after start up? It doesn't always freeze up at the same time. It freezes up just prior to when the icons load in windows. When run in safe mode it freezes as well.

I've tried to go into the bios and it will freeze, after trying to do the 3 part hd scan.

Freezing in different places could be bad memory.

Even if you put your laptop in a fridge for a day long, if you didn't put thermal paste or your cooler and fan are badly attached to the processor, it could freeze, after some seconds. Never heard of thermal paste before. That's a new one to me.

Yes but memory could fail for any number of reasons.
Did you mess with the bios? I also had a situation where incorrectly clocked memory caused these types of symptoms, though they took longer to run into.

Do you remember if the fan was directly stick on the processor, or you had an heatsink between the fan and processor?

Do you remember having moved the heat sink?

Just answer my question:

1) Do you remember if the fan was directly stick on the processor, or you had an heatsink between the fan and processor?

2) If you had an heat sink, do you remember having moved the heat sink?

I ask these questions; because I need to know if you need to put thermal paste again or not. If we conclude positively, the problem would be found, and you'll probably need to put thermal paste on the processor.

Do you remember having moved (from the processor) it when you replaced the fan?

Could it be the processor?
Maybe when the fan stopped working, it could have damaged your processor
