As Asher noted, it's not released yet; that's a beta (RC2, probably) error.

What's scary is the number of complete dumb****s who install the beta SPs. I mean, I don't touch them myself - I prefer to have a computer that works from day to day - as the whole point of the testing is to find all the random incompatibilities that cause BSODs, and they find plenty of them.

They clearly tell you that you will probably have errors and crashes and who knows what, so don't install this unless you know how to deal with this, etc... and yet, people post on their forums "i don't know what to do, it just boots to a bsod, am i going to have to buy a new hard drive and new windows?" ...

Pure genius...

When automatic updates installs it... and windows update recommends installing it... doesn't matter what you call it... it's released.

And a fix if anyone is having problems:

Apparently it was released on May 6th on the website, but you have to explicitly download it.

The schedule posted above was the original schedule, certainly not what they actually did. I couldn't find it in a quick perusal of the site last night when I made that post, and it was not what came up if you looked on the main XP update page (still SP2).

Ubuntu is a nightmare unless you don't mind using the command line. It's still the best Linux, but IMO Linux is still in a Windows 3.1-era of usability. It's fine if all you do is check email, but anything slightly more complex than that opens a big can of worms.

I've been using Vista for a couple of days and its been very nice so far. It runs very smoothly on my new hardware. I haven't encountered any major problem yet. For a while, I thought that I might have to buy a new laser printer, since there weren't any Vista drivers for my Lexmark. (But that's Lexmark's fault, not Microsoft's) Fortunately, I found a Samsung driver that works very well (they're basically the same printers).

Hmm, neither my home nor work computer has done it through automatic updates. I wonder if they're rolling it out slowly?
