Default New Jersey plans first execution in 44 years...
I'm very surprised at the lack of thunderous applause from the anti dp people.
NJ can do what they want. It's their problem.

I think the anti dp people, which I am myself, is not so much applauding now because if someone needs it, it's NJ.

I agree completely.

It makes me happy to hear some good news, for a change, about the status of human rights in the world.

Is that supposed to be a real arguement against the DP?

Well, ok. Let's look at names not on the list.
France. Now what have you got to say? Uh huh. Just as I thought.

After a quick scan: Japan, South Korea, Taiwan. Obviously not Western democracies in the strict sense of the word, but I think they serve as decent counterexamples to your trend.

edit: In fact, that could imply a very different trend especially since Russia doesn't appear to be on that list.

True, but they execute far fewer people than you might think and the general culture is very different form the west. They were under strong US influence in the past as well...

And in any case the list of counterexamples of successful democracies is much, much longer...

In some places there is a need.

Most Executions carried out in 2006

China (at least 1,010 but sources suggest the real tally is between 7,500 and 8,000)[10]
Iran (177)
Pakistan (82)
Iraq (at least 65)
Sudan (at least 65)
United States (53)

I have no intention of being trolled into a debate of the pros and cons of the death penalty. Been there, done that.

I'm just congratulating NJ on moving forward.
