I took it back and they told me that I would have to send it back to the manufacturer to have repaired and would take 2-3 months. Thus, I would not have a camera for the holidays. I informed them that I had purchased the store warranty, and they promptly replaced the camera. Having the camera for the holidays was well worth the $80 bucks. A year later, about 4 years ago, I bought a DVD home entertainment center with all the speakers, receiver, etc... We moved into our house in San Jose which was undergoing construction and there was lots of dust. About a year or so ago the player stopped working. It was unable to go through a whole movie without skipping or pausing in such a manner that it was impossible to watch the movie. Wifey was going through old receipts and found that we had also bought the store warranty on this item. We took it back last Friday, the tried to fix it, and last night told us that they would replace it. We went in today and got the most top of the line DVD player available, for free! It is much better than the one is broke, and they even let me keep the speakers of the old player. this new one has wireless speakers, ipod ready, everything! I am stoked. Anyway, needless to say, we spent the $40 for the 4-year in store warranty. Let me just say, that Best Buy may cost a little more, and the store warranties may seem like crap, but I love them and will never not buy one. Seeing as 2 out of 3 electronic items I buy seems to break with in 4 years... and I can just upgrade those when they do, for the cost of a little foresight. Amen to that my friend. When I first saw the thread title, I thought, time to come to defend Best Buy, but was very pleased another has had some of my very experiences. We buy almsot all electronics from here, save a minimal amount from somewhere else. I have never had a problem, if it needs replacing, ya got the warranty, its a done deal. Thanks to Best Buy!! This is where Best Buy makes money, right? While buying a warranty worked out for Japher, in most cases it's not getting used, so they're just raking it in.
Consumer Reports doesn't recommend getting them. I'll stick with their advice. I've never bought one and never regretted it. I don't think I'd shop Best Buy for any "major" purchase. I've bought computer games there, the occasional CD or DVD. Maybe my headset. But what I've spent the most on is computer parts, and I've gotten those online. |

I bought a Sony VAIO at Best Buy almost 4 years ago. I could have bought an extended warranty, which for that item would have lasted 2 years. As many of you know earlier this year my computer completely crashed. I took it to the Geek squad. It took them 2 weks to determine that the problem was not hardware, but that some critical program had somehow gotten erased or contaminated, so the only way to fix my computer was to back up the hard drive then wipe it and re-install the basic programs. When I bought the machine years ago Best Buy installed the basic programs, but did not give me the discs, so the discs had to be ordered from the manufacturer. Best Buy wouldn't order the discs for me, they insisted that I order them myself. When I brought the discs in to them they took another 2 weeks to install them. Finally I brought the machine home I discovered that the back-up discs which I paid over $100 for them to make only contained useless data from the "Desktop" folders.
Subsequently I don't buy big ticket items from Best Buy anymore. The 'Geek Squad' is a joke. |

The 'Geek Squad' is a joke. That they are. Thay could even fix the DVD player, which I am pretty sure wasn't a big deal.
I took my computer in there once to get a new video card installed and a memory upgrade. The guy plug in his mouse and monitor and power up the computer. A warning came up, indicating that Explorer couldn't access the internet (which I always got since having my firewall block it, just never bothered to change the start-up) the mouse didn't work. The guy told me I obviously had a virus and that it would cost $75 just to run the diagnostics. I told him that I didn't have a virus, that I had done a bad job of disabling IE. He continued to explain that if it wasn't a virus then why was his mouse not working. I kind explained to him that I don't use a serial mouse and don't have the driver, that I use a PS2 mouse. I took the computer away from him, bought the video card and memor myself, and installed them. Haven't had a problem, and that virus mysteriously disappered. The Geek Squad has to suck. If they were able to fix anything how would I get new stuff? |
