The point is that as leagues become more and more profitable, the teams with the money will simply make GOBS of more money while the rest stay where they are. It happens in every league that doesn't have constraints on it. |

Nice Threadomancy.
![]() Originally posted by Agathon And at least before, the big clubs weren't gerrymandering the competitions to make sure they played in Europe every season. Perhaps Agathon can explain how the team that is 4th in the EPL transfer-spending stakes over the last three years (and the team that are third, come to that) doesn't play in the Champs League, whereas the team that is eleventh plays in it every year. ![]() The idea that the old European Cup was a great competition is a myth, btw. There were about four or five decent teams in it every year, and a whole bunch of crap teams. Now the tournament (mis-named though it is) has all the best teams in Europe in it. The only thing they should bring back from the old tournament is the name. |

The original premise of this thread was wrong anyway. United would never have become the all-conquering team of the nineties if they hadn't floated. In fact the club may have floundered pretty badly.
I'm pretty relaxed about Glazer and have been from the start. It's not in his financial interests to screw the club up, and Ferguson still has money to spend. A good quarter of the Premiership is now in foreign ownership anyway. |
