More seriously, the constant screeching of the tabloids about the state of the NHS, schools, immigrants, yobbery etc probably plays a part in this. Brits are materially better off then ever before, but are also quite convinced that society is crumbling around them. QFT. I expect this 'survey' says more about miserablism in the UK than living standards. |

It's for first-world countries. Utah's economy is capitalist, government is Democratic, and the standard of living in Utah is higher than the US average. Deseret would be first-world if the US is... (At least until we revolted to a Mormon Theocracy.) |

Basically it is a popularity/pissing contest much like the UN's best place to live "survey". If people are interested in some of the things which made this survey rubbish: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6359849.stm |

The authors say they used the most up-to-date information to assess "whether children feel loved, cherished, special and supported, within the family and community, and whether the family and community are being supported in this task by public policy and resources". http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6359363.stm
This is the same bullshit garbage from the same idiots who brought us the Unicef best country to live in survey. It's pure rubbish since be definition to score high a country must be socialist. "whether the family and community are being supported in this task by public policy and resources" which translates to they vote for countries which have the same ideological sympathies the authors have and the facts don't matter. How healthy and happy the children are, as judged in a mathmatical and reproducable way, doesn't matter and instead it is all about promoting one political/ideological system. Is it any wonder the UN's survey's get laughed at so much? Hell, these idiots even claim that income inequality some how matters more then median income. Those assurtions are purely political and have no barring on the supposed subject of the survey. |
