DVD, I second the motion. Nero, if you have Nero, does a good job.

Shiva, I know someone that doesn't burn a thing. Instead, she does as you say, and buys all these hdd's.
I can only guess at her filing system for them.

A 400GB PATA hard drive and a cheap external enclosure won't set you back more than $150 (probably less). Or, you could buy a 3rd hard drive to go with the two already in your computer, put them in RAID 5, and have redundancy as well as increased performance

If important, use multiple back up methods, as in DVD, perhaps USB stick, maybe a shell as well.. Or you could buy more HDDs... External HDDs aren't necessarily a bad idea.

If not so important, the cheapest way is DVDs at the moment. It's quite important since the bulk of the data is my own gfx stuff (one multi layer pic can go easily over 10 or 15 MB, not to mention 3d meshes or animations which can be much bigger), which I can get nowhere else when it's gone. I think DVD is good....additional backups are maybe overkill though

Cheap hard drives don't really provide much in the way of backup, because cheap hard drives have a tendency to break. DVD's are fairly sturdy unless you're using them as drink coasters.

The cheapest way is to memorize all the porn in your brain, so you can just fantasize later on. Costs nothing.

USB sticks are a waste for backup of large amounts of data. For ~5 GB, just buy two rewritable DVD disks. As a DVD is about 4.7 GB, that will serve you well until you hit some 9.4 GB of data to backup. Rewritable DVD disks are a bit expensive, but that's only relatively speaking. What do they cost, 2$? 2.5$?

External hard drives are great if you have a larger amount of data, though.

Anyway, what do you people do to have so much data? I find that I can fit all of my critical data on one DVD disk - I have many more gigabytes of other data, but don't really need to backup it because I can redownload or otherwise reacquire it.

It's my own gfx library if you will. And it's not purely for hobby anymore (as it was earlier, when I just modded some game stuff here and there for fun).

Judging from the anwers, I guess I'll look around for a good DVD solution

Organization... I really should get the tags on my MP3s right someday. So that all those fancy media players would actually become useful.

By the way, two of the most awesome media players I know are amaroK and Listen (one of the few things justifying the existence of France ). It's just a shame that neither of them has a version for Windows.

I don't know about rewritable DVDs, but my experience with rewritable CDs is that they are quite unstable. Just looking at them is enough to corrupt your data. Actually, not looking at them is just as bad.
