Hello Dear Brothers + Sisters,
I have read all the old threads about visiting the blessed Monastery in Essex. Thank you! I am hoping to get some updated information (as the last postings on this I believe were over two years ago). It is difficult to plan, as the Monastery does not have a website; I am unsure of their service times, etc. Unfortunately, our time is very short. We are in London only a day and a half. I am hopeful we might take the train out for their evening Jesus Prayer service. But I am unsure if they have the services every day? We will be there on June 14th, a Tuesday. Would we be blessed to venerate their relics - how might I inquire about this before we arrive? If we are not staying overnight, should I call or write ahead? One final question, will we have trouble getting a taxi and train back into London if we attend the evening service (which I believe is at 6pm), then venerate the relics - so maybe leaving around 9pm? Will this put us in a precarious situations for transportation (either from the monastery to the train or the train back into London)? Thank you so much for sharing from your experience! Forgive me - Barbara |

From what I understand they do not do services every day the only place I do know that has services every day is the Russian Cathedral in London.
About the relics if you have a chance to speak to Fr Kyril the abbot about it. Call ahead as they do not always respond to letters due to lack of time. BTW they do not have an answer machine so it just rings and rings. There won't be train problems unless there are strikes and cancellations. Most trains and underground finish just after midnight. I personally leave quite late from the monastery and arrive back into London between 10-11pm. |

Dear Barbara,
I have just read your request for assistance to achieve a visit to St John's Monastary in Essex, UK. I live a few miles from St John's and know and visit the community often. I am more than happy to contact the community to check service times and arrangments for you. If you travel by train from London, Liverpool Street Station, your destination will be Witham, Essex (50 minutes). The car journey from the Witham Station would be 20 minutes -- that could be taxi, or, if I were free, I would be very happy to meet you and drive you to the Monastary. Do make contact with me on david.a.hillyer@gmail.com or +44 7941 223 679 Warm wishes, David Hillyer |

Hi,
I'm heading to the same monastery in Essex soon. I was wondering, if any of you could give me an advice - how to get to the nearest sea from the monastery? I was thinking of taking a day to go and walk along the beach. I no, it is far, may-be anyone could direct me? I know I have to get on a train somewhere. Excuse me, if I'm leading the topic on a wrong track. |

Hi, this is my second response to your posting, for some reason my posting to you two days ago hasn't been put up!
Anyway, I live a few miles from St John's, and know the community well. If you wish, I am happy to check out timings for services and return to you. As far as travel is concerned, you would need to leave London, Liverpool Street Station and head for Witham, Essex (50 minutes). The car/taxi journey to St John's Monastary in Tolleshunt Knights is about 20 minutes. If I am free, I might be able to pick you up and return you to the station. Contact me on david.a.hillyer@gmail.com Warm wishes, David Hillyer |
