I also do lots of needlework. Here is a link to another trusted ebay store. I have made the Vogel one and it hangs in my daughter's bedroom.

Angela and Marianthy, the trouble with needlework tapestries is that the quality varies from country to country or, to be more accurate, from manufacturer to manufacturer. The people who paint the tapestry are sometimes very good but sometimes they are terrible. That's why the colours differ and also the features change - they use the same original painting as a base/stencil but the final tapestry might be quite different from the painting they copied
I have done one of the canvases from Marinathy's site : "SPIRITUAL NEEDLEPOINT CANVAS:THE SUFFERING OF JESUS #2 ". It's not exactly the same, but obviously the same original painting is depicted. My canvas was very fine and the details of the painting were excellent - a lot better than the one shown on this site. I did the face and neck in petit point - the face turned out wonderfully, so expressive, and His eyes full of pain, but I had a lot of trouble with the neck, shoulders, and chest. I did these 3 times and went to a lot of trouble unpicking what I had already done as the stitches were very tiny. I had to do it though because my first two attempts made it seem as if these areas had a dreadful skin disease. I finally chose very light flesh colours, even for the darker areas and finally achieved something that looked nearly natural. I would not recommend this to anyone. The second tapestry that I am still doing is the one I posted on my personal albums page. - it's turning out beautifully, but again, I'm doing the face and hands in petit point and it's a lot of work. My canvas is not as beautiful as the painting I posted and I was quite upset when I found the original painting of my canvas on the Internet. |

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...007-22,WZPA:en The Gobelin canvases are the best I think. Here are the links : http://www.solaria-gallery.com/gobelins/gob/i3.htm http://www.solaria-gallery.com/gobelins/gob/i41.htm This site has lots of religious tapestries. http://www.abcstitch.com/subjects_ph...all=yes&page=8 There are some beautiful Orthodox tapestries here : http://www.balkan-gallery.com/religious.htm#i41 |

Effie, thank you for those links. The Gobelins are truly beautiful!! Tapestry work is my hobby. I did a beautiful tapestry of Panagia while I was on chemo...I did her crown and stars with different chimmering gold threads...every one would come and admire it while I was getting chemo. It was a Diamant that i picked up in Greece in 2006.
I have another huge tapestry that took me 3 years to complete and I have yet to frame it...it is so expensive to frame!! i m saving money as we speak! I am working on another huge tapestry, then I will do another religious one for my sister, who is getting married within the next three years. I would like her to have one for her room. Tapestry work helps me from being idle, and I like to pray when I work on them. In Christ, Marianthy |

Yes, Marianthy, I understand completely. I too pray when I am working on my tapestry. It is the same as those who paint icons - they pray as they are creating. We do the same.
I rarely am content with the recommended DMC threads . I try and match my colours - beautiful colours that are God's creation and one of the delights of embroidery - and try and create something that is only mine. As beautiful as the colours of the threads are, they are nothing compared to the colours of nature. I have a wonderful view from my verandahs and looking at the sky sometimes I am overwhelmed by the beauty of the various colours and combinations of colours that decorators would not think of using together. Observing nature makes us aware of how awesome all of God's works are. In embroidery, faces and flesh colours give me the most trouble and I really wish that DMC would broaden their colour range of these threads. Effie |
