Does anyone play or do the blackouts prevent your playing. btw when do the blackouts occur anyway.

Imagine being in the Sunday Million, down to the last 72 with 3 x chip average - and the internet goes down.
That should answer your question - came in 42nd.

Pens were thrown and the cat got shouted at on that day.

Never again from the D.R.

Play from a laptop while connected to the Internet through a USB dongle, preferably from Orange (since they dont cut you off after hitting the limit). That way you are good for the duration of your laptop battery should a power blackout occur - 5 hours or so, should be good enough to finish a tournament. I sometimes play long sessions (mostly cash games though) - never really had a problem, just occasional minor hiccups when I needed to reconnect.

The problem is not the power going down as I would assume they had domestic backup power.
The problem comes when the Dominican internet engineers do planned maintenance in the middle of the day or when their system is faulty which happens a lot.
The switches have huge backup power resources so that the switch does not go down hard.
Again, the internet service is intermittent in the D.R.
That is when the cat gets nervous.

Cash games are safe as you simply sit out, but tournys are horrible as you just get blinded away and all you can do is crack another Presidente and imagine what might have been.

I kind of choose my games a bit more carefully these days.
During the years I was in the D.R. and Haiti and unable to play properly, the on-line game up and changed on me.(2004-2011)
In the early days I could just soak up the gravy, now it is just too nuts - either that or I have become old and feeble minded.

Unless you have decent rake-back deal I would not even bother these days.

In the D.R. you are never more than 1 hour from a decent live game.
There are some pitfalls in the D.R. playing poker due to collusion, but you can spot it a mile off and adjust.
Learn to play the sucker tourist arriving a bit drunk while on holiday to blow some loose cash.
A Hawaiian shirt and cheap sandals help here.
Always remember this though. If you buy into a 100-200 pesos game (the most common stakes in the D.R.) with 10,000 pesos, the Dominicans you are playing against even though they might be well off Dominicans see 10k pesos as a substantial amount of money. Even if they have a bunch of cash they will still baulk (if only subconsciously) at anything over a 100US$ bet.

But if you ever want to see the softest table in history, go to the El Rancho Casino in Petionville.
Those guys are rich and they suck real bad.
