the rest in Travellers Checks

You can use, with caution, ATM machines also.

Most places will take your plastic, so a lot of hard cash is not necessary. If you change dollars into pesos, do so only as what are called "Casas de Cambio" or at a bank. You will get a receipt for your money and the currency you receive will be legit.

You will ALWAYS get a better rate for US Greenbacks in The DR.
I agree, if you wanna be safe and are coming for several weeks, you can bring US travelers cheques. You will pay a hefty service charge to use credit cards at hotels and restaurants by the credit card issuer/bank.

Hi!

I just came back from 10 days in DR and their exchange rate is very fair! I took some pesos but regretted it... it's better to bring US cash for sure. THeir exchange rate in Puerto Plata as of yesterday was 29 pesos - 1$ US. They also advertised 21 pesos - 1$ CAN although I wouldn't recommend Canadian dollars.... US currency goes a long way there and most are very fair. The only place to be careful of is in the resort/hotel. The resort I was in was only giving 19 pesos to the US dollar because it was a private exchange bureau.... be warey of those.

Cheers!

Very true, you do better with US cash or traveler's cheques.

The rate on Friday was 1.24 to buy US cash. Last year I paid 1.32

Default changing currency
Hi, I will travelling to DR in April. I am Canadian and was wondering whether to change my Canadian money to Dominican Pesos or change it to US currency. Everyone seems to have a different opinion. Happy Holidays Everyone!
