These types of discussions are good BEFORE the thing gets built, but since you asked and my family is based in and around Santiago, I'll say that it doesn't matter.

People in this country like malls because of the convenience, period.

Besides, Santo Domingo has around 8 + shopping malls and shopping centers, Santiago is just catching up.

They are now up to 2, soon it will be 3, then 4, etc. Of course, by that time SDQ would have even more.

I really don't know what is the drive behind building so many shopping malls, but they are being built! Soon, well have more shopping malls than people to visit them!

Hmm, I wonder how we measure on shopping malls per capita? Santo Domingo has more Mercedes Benz owners per capita than any other city in the hemisphere. I won't be surprise if the same turns out to be true in the shopping mall sphere.
