That was the figure given in that Life article.
The article also explained how the HIV passed from the homosexual community to the heterosexual community and thence into the the Dominican prostitute community. The article emphasized just how the French speaking gay community had taken advantage of the Haitian poverty to "enjoy" themselves. It emphasized the heterosexuality of most Haitian men. It emphasized the fact that these men then transmitted the disease to their women and children. Finally, the article emphasized the "taste" of Haitian men for lighter skinned Dominican prostitutes, who apparently constitute a rotating group of women which visits Haiti, the Dutch West Indies and the DR in a continual flow, thereby explaining just how this group came to be infected, and how they, in turn, passed on the virus. I can only remember the date of the Article in Life: August 15th. And the fact that the article was written by a doctor doing the study in Haiti. I agree that it is too little, too late, but welcome, nonetheless. However, this is the third or fourth announcement of these projects over the past few months. I know that DR1 News has carried articles on the Artibonito reclamation project.... HB |

I don't get your point, Tony. Isn't it already well known that SIDA is far less dangerous for hetero males.
I suspect that the alarming increase in rates of infection is for women - the result of "switch hitting" by some of their male partners. That may not matter to you because you would not be very likely to catch it from even an infected female partner (who had previously been with a guy who had previously been with a guy - something I'm sure you don't like to think about a lot). But the statistical trend is not good for the female population. |

Not that I'd mind if the money really was going to be used to help alleviate the suffering of those infected!!
It's sad to see someone you've known for 8-9 yrs waste away with the disease - all the while plying their "trade". However I fear the funds will just go to pad some gov't officials pocket and I'll continue to see gals and guys in the neighbourhood vanish before my eyes!! |

We always tend to think that we are inmmune from what ails others... The folly of the ego..
I don´t know the actual statistics but I have witnessed an alarming increase of AIDS cases in this small non touristic town.. When one begins to see 13 year olds from middle class families diagnosed with this awful disease a thing not so uncommon, it is time to pay attention.. Education and protection is the key.. Let it not be a taboo subject when you speak to Dominicans or anyone else. Bring it into the light as much as you can. If you are going to be with a person who earns their living through sex, enlighten them.. warn them.. educate them!! You may be saving not only you life and theirs, but several others as well. ![]() |

It seems that P.M. Chretien is giving away money to help AIDS. If you read the story, the money is for Haiti and the DR. That is just fair, considering how it was the gay population of Quebec that created the problem in the first place. They discovered that the poor Haitians, desperate for money, would do "anything" for money and converted Haiti in the AIDS capitol of the Western Hemisphere. Heterosexual Haitians would entertain gay tourists from the Far North, get HIV infected and pass it on to their women and to the Dominican Prostitutes that plied the Haitian trade. 80% of the Dominican prostitute population are now HIV positive.
Gee thanks Chretien for helping us out! HB Ref: Check out the August 15, 1995 or 1996 article in LIFE magazine. |

When AIDS first came out it was called the 4H disease
Homosexuals Haitians Heroin Addicts Hemophilliacs. Improved blood Screening has saved the Hemophilliacs. Haiti is a lost cause. The other 2 H's still apply. In the US the percentage of those with AIDS is at 92% Homosexuals and Drug Addicts. The other 8% are lying! |

Now if I only could tell who is a prostitute, and who isn't!!!!
Kind of a "Broad" statement "HB"! When it comes to the spread of AIDS,finger pointing is a "fools Errand"! Plenty of "Blame" for everyone!!! It is not a "Gay"disease, anymore than it is a "Heterosexual,or a IV drug user,or a Hemophiliac's" disease! It is a Human disease!! Take the money!!!!!! "Scary" isn't it! The first is that in the Bateyes there is a 5% HIV-positive rate. Higher among women, fairly young, and men fairly middle aged(40-45). Children were not seen as that many.
Second article said that the growth rate in the AIDS epidemis is slowing. Overall, there is a 0,9% AIDS population in the DR. The areas with largest AIDS percentages are #1: Santiago, Puerto Plata and Espaillat (Moca). #2 The Eastern part of the country-Boca Chica, San Pedro, La Romana; #3 the Linea Noroeste (Mao-Montecristi). All these regions have the following in common: Tourism, flows of migrations, especially Haitians, Port facilities, and free trade industrial zones. Be safe people. HB FYI: The estimated cost to the DR to treat the approximately 72,000 cases of AIDS for one year is only US$216 million dollars! And that is based on only US$3,000 per patient per year! |

i believe that this AIDS initiative was first announced at the G8 summit last summer in Alberta. as always, the amount pledged was not nearly enough to satisfy those on "the front lines."
CIDA, the overseeing Canadian agency, has been active (at times controversially) with food distribution programs to reduce child malnutrition in Haiti for many years. interesting to note that no mention was made elsewhere about the Antibonite Watershed plan. i would think that it would be as controversial as the AIDS "invasion". mob |
