Oscar Lama, the 31 yr. old heir to the Lama family estate and a computer entrepeneur himself was kidnapped from his own office according to the press today.
A ransom of RD$27,000,000 in dollars and pesos was paid. The preliminary information is that the police again was kept from the negotiations and that foreign experts were brought in to negotiate. The police was dissapointed again that their services were not utilized and that their anti-kidnapping unit is getting spider webs. Part of this distrust is the fact that victims' families fear for the life of the kidnapped victim for two reasons. First, they believe the police is involved in the kidnappings, since to this date none have been solved by police. The other is that they feel that even if they are not involved, they do not have the capability or intelligence to deal with these crimes. So far these events have the makings of foreign cartels with highly specialized gangsters. The kidnappers this time had foreign type accents. They have quick getaway capabilities and strategic support. This new category of crime will increase as fast as the dollar, because both things are directly related....a lack of confidence in government authorities to stop it. Also the amounts to be paid in the future will only be dollars. Expect some more fireworks and bigger names. The domino effect on unsolved crimes brings about more crime. Could drug Czar-in-prison Florian Feliz have anything to do with this? He is now being investigated for running the operation of the 56kilos that came from the border with military officers involved. Not far fetched at all!! TW |
