Shocked to see in the Sun this morning that former local Scott Harding was seriously injured in a car accident in NYC. Hang in there, Scotty - our thoughts are with you and your family - Russ, Shirley, Brian and Mike. If you read the entire thing, you'll see he has no insurance, a not uncommon problem among musicians and the self employed. You have to be making serious money to afford private non-employer-sponsored plans, which can easily cost upwards of a thousand dollars a month, and usually have high deductables and numerous claims restrictions.

And of course now no insurance company will touch him at any premium.

Let's hope the benefit concerts raise plenty money. Scott's going to need it.

I feel obliged to mention that Scott engineered and mixed guitarist Rich Rabnett and his band's latest album, right before this tragic accident. The 5 recently had their CD release party at the Waldorf on Hastings and donated the proceeds of the night to Scott's recovery.

The band sounded great, and I think its a beautiful and selfless act that these guys came together to do that. Independent records are hard to make and expensive and the impulse is to try to make as much of your money back as quickly as possible. That these guys put that impulse aside and tried to bring some attention to something bigger than themselves is inspiring.

CANADIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY SAYS “BRING IT ON, NEW YORK”

Vancouver, B.C.: Friends and fellow musicians behind the sold-out Hardstock show April 25 at the Commodore are at it again. The April 25 Hardstock event for NY/BC musician Scotty Hard, aka Scott Harding raised close to $25,000 for the talented musician’s trust find. However the work is not done.

“There were so many talented musicians that wanted to give to Scott that we have organized another benefit for his trust fund. This one is called HOLY HARDSTOCK!!! The show will be a sit-down concert at one of Vancouver’s most beautiful venues, Christ Church Cathedral ,” says Dennis Mills, Executive Producer of Hardstock 08, and Holy Hardstock!!!.

The new show will feature different bands and more jazz and singer songwriters. Don’t expect a somber or sedate evening. Although this event is an all ages show, it is what Mills calls, “an old-school variety show.”

Holy Hardstock!!! will take place Friday June 13th at Christ Church Cathedral at the corner of Georgia and Burrard in Downtown Vancouver. The features the Jazzmanian Devils, Jim Byrnes, Simon Kendall (from Doug and the Slugs), Something About Reptiles, Beatrice Smartt, I Braineater, Sandy Scofield, John Korsrud’s Latin Jazz Quartet, Clare Love, Brian W. Roy Goble (from the Subhumans), Trevor Jones Arntzen, Bob’s Lounge, and DJ David Love Jones.

Like the first phenomenally successful Hardstock event, 100% of all net proceeds will go to the Scotty Hard Trust, a legal trust fund set up In New York to benefit Scott Harding, aka Scotty Hard.

Background on Scott Harding:

The accident on February 16th that left Scott a paraplegic occurred in the early morning hours as the musician was returning home from a recording session. The car Scott was riding in was hit, and the resulting injuries have left him paralyzed him from the chest down. Scott has been moved from hospital to a sub-acute centre in the Bronx where he continues his recovery. His list of production credits is staggering, including Chris Rock (Never Scared), Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Wu-Tang Clan, Tricky, Medeski Martin & Wood, Prince Paul, De La Soul, PM Dawn, Brand New Heavies, Vernon Reid, Material, and literally dozens of other well-known and influential artists from the jazz, hip-hop and rock genres.
