Default Stefan Molyneux and Larkin Rose - Self Defense
Very good discussion here regarding self defense v martial arts. The idea is that Martial Arts is not the same as knowing how to street fight. Larkin claims that most bullies who start trouble dont know how to actually fight, so it helps if you do know some moves. Stefan claims that knowing those moves are fine, but that they likely will not help you in a real world combat situation. Martial Arts takes years of your life to learn, yet the chances of you actually having to use it is slim to none, and if you do have to use it, hope your attacker is alone and has no weapon - Two things that are usually not likely.

I say the Firearm is the great equalizer. Learn how to use it, and also learn how to de-escalate situations, or get out of situations before they get out of control.

Opinions?

Didn't have time to listen to the video this morning but I would say that they are both partly right. Martial arts isn't magic but it will help a fair bit. If you are going to learn some type of martial arts it is best to learn a form that has you doing a ton of sparring. It is one thing to know a move and it is another to execute it on someone who is moving and uncooperative. But once you get fairly good this stuff it can work.

I know that it has value though. My brother with a few years of MMA @ 140 lbs kicked the shit out of a bouncer who was probably 260 ish. Plus the bouncer would have had some experience in fighting or dealing with aggressive /violent people. That is just one example don't have time to get into ll of them now.

I have also done a few years of MMA several years ago and even though I am rusty the basics stay with you even under pressure because you have done so much work on them. Keeping hands up to protect the head, punching with the whole body, not overextending while punching and losing balance. Footwork and balance. That sort of stuff gives you a huge advantage over the average guy.

I think it is worth learning but if your opponent has a gun, knife or you are outnumbered it would still be best to get out of there.
