Default New release' of climate emails 11/22/2011
This is great.

What appears to be a new batch of emails and other documents from the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit has been released.
Contents include more than 5,000 emails and other documents, some relating to work with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
A similar release in 2009 triggered the "ClimateGate" affair and accusations of fraud that inquiries later dismissed.
Now, as then, the release comes shortly before the annual UN climate summit.
The university says it has "no evidence of a recent breach in our systems", and suggests that the cache - posted on a Russian server - has "the appearance of having been held back after the theft of data and emails in 2009 to be released at a time designed to cause maximum disruption to the imminent international climate talks".
Its statement continues: "This appears to be a carefully-timed attempt to reignite controversy over the science behind climate change when that science has been vindicated by three separate independent inquiries and number of studies - including, most recently, the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature group."
A text file included with the batch, apparently written by someone involved in the release and headed "FOIA 2011 - Background and Context", reads: "'One dollar can save a life' - the opposite must also be true. "Poverty is a death sentence. Nations must invest $37 trillion in energy technologies by 2030 to stabilize greenhouse gas emissions at sustainable levels."
It then picks a number of phrases from the email batch, whose senders and recipients - if the batch is genuine - include UEA's Phil Jones and Michael Mann from Penn State University in the US.
Reviews of "ClimateGate" in the UK, of the IPCC, and of Michael Mann's work by Penn State authorities, have all cleared scientists of fraud and malpractice, although recommendations were made on increasing openness.
The writer of the "FOIA 2011" file claims to have 220,000 more emails.
Drip, drip The first "ClimateGate" material arrived on the web almost exactly two years ago, just before the UN climate summit in Copenhagen that was scheduled to see about 140 heads of state and government deciding on a new global climate treaty.
A hacker entered a backup server at the university and downloaded a file containing administrative passwords, which were subsequently used to access a vast number of files and emails dating back to 1997.
It was clear at the time that only a small portion of the total tranche downloaded had been released.
UEA's belief that the newly-released material comes from that original hack is backed up by BBC News' examination of the messages, which shows that in at least two cases they derive from email chains that were also released in 2009.
Three inquiries in the UK in 2010 found that the CRU team had not acted fraudulently or tried to manipulate data, as they were accused of doing.
But the university accepted it needed to revise its policy for dealing with Freedom of Information requests, which it has now done.
CRU has also released all of the data it held from weather stations around the world - even some that the original owners of such data wanted kept private.
In partnership with the UK Met Office, CRU maintains one of the three most important global temperature records that have been used to demonstrate the reality of 20th Century warming.
A police investigation into the hack is still ongoing.

I don't argue against there being global warming during 20th Century. I think most people agree with this...

However evidenve for global warming being anthropogenic (man made) is very weak. The big point about the previous release of the climate-gate e-mails was not so much about the statistical tweaking of reported numbers, and how they made graphs with cut off points strengthening the AGW-advocates position/theories, but the tactics those e-mails showed in terms of marginalizing and ridiculing AGW-skeptics.

Climate (at least on Northern Hemisphere) was warmer a 1000 years ago. Vikings were farming Greenland for instance. Try that today! There is a very strong correlation between solar cycles and super cycles and the temperature of the earth, but this correlation scientists have lost grants and positions from claiming...

Climategate 2.0: New E-Mails Rock The Global Warming Debate

"
“I’ve been told that IPCC is above national FOI [Freedom of Information] Acts. One way to cover yourself and all those working in AR5 would be to delete all emails at the end of the process,”writes Phil Jones, a scientist working with the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), in a newly released email.

“Any work we have done in the past is done on the back of the research grants we get – and has to be well hidden,” Jones writes in another newly released email. “I’ve discussed this with the main funder (U.S. Dept of Energy) in the past and they are happy about not releasing the original station data.”

The original Climategate emails contained similar evidence of destroying information and data that the public would naturally assume would be available according to freedom of information principles. “Mike, can you delete any emails you may have had with Keith [Briffa] re AR4 [UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 4th Assessment]?” Jones wrote to Penn State University scientist Michael Mann in an email released in Climategate 1.0. “Keith will do likewise. … We will be getting Caspar [Ammann] to do likewise. I see that CA [the Climate Audit Web site] claim they discovered the 1945 problem in the Nature paper!!”"

"...“The trick may be to decide on the main message and use that to guid[e] what’s included and what is left out” of IPCC reports, writes Jonathan Overpeck, coordinating lead author for the IPCC’s most recent climate assessment.

“I gave up on [Georgia Institute of Technology climate professor] Judith Curry a while ago. I don’t know what she thinks she’s doing, but its not helping the cause,” wrote Mann in another newly released email."

"...“I have been talking w/ folks in the states about finding an investigative journalist to investigate and expose” skeptical scientist Steve McIntyre, Mann writes in another newly released email."

"More than revealing misconduct and improper motives, the newly released emails additionally reveal frank admissions of the scientific shortcomings of global warming assertions.

“Observations do not show rising temperatures throughout the tropical troposphere unless you accept one single study and approach and discount a wealth of others. This is just downright dangerous. We need to communicate the uncertainty and be honest. Phil, hopefully we can find time to discuss these further if necessary,” writes Peter Thorne of the UK Met Office.

“I also think the science is being manipulated to put a political spin on it which for all our sakes might not be too clever in the long run,” Thorne adds.

“Mike, The Figure you sent is very deceptive … there have been a number of dishonest presentations of model results by individual authors and by IPCC,” Wigley acknowledges."
