Modern art takes an unexpected twist: Empty sculpture stand and blank canvas are main attractions at ‘invisible art’ exhibition
Some of the best art here you will never see........... By Eleanor Harding PUBLISHED: 17:39 GMT, 18 May 2012 | UPDATED: 18:09 GMT, 18 May 2012 It looks like the aftermath of a museum robbery. But this empty sculpture stand is in fact the main attraction at a leading British gallery – and punters will be charged £8 a head to see it. The ‘work’ was created as a stunt by Andy Warhol and will form part of an exhibition of ‘invisible art’ at London’s Hayward Gallery. ![]() Visitors will be asked to look beyond ‘material objects’ and ‘set their imaginations on fire’ by looking at the empty gallery spaces. Also included in the 50 ‘invisible works’ will be an empty piece of paper, an empty canvas and an empty space. It is thought to be the first such exhibition staged at a major institution in the UK. But it is likely to provide more fuel to critics who see much of modern art as a case of the ‘Emperor’s new clothes’. Quite literally, in this case. ![]() ![]() Ralph Rugoff, director of the Hayward Gallery, offered a different view. He said: ‘I think visitors will find that there is plenty to see and experience in this exhibition of invisible art. ‘This exhibition highlights that art isn’t about material objects, it’s about setting our imaginations alight, and that’s what the artists in this show do in many varied ways.’ Warhol’s ‘Invisible Sculpture'; - dating from 1985 - consists of an empty plinth on which he had once briefly stepped. Another work, ‘1000 Hours of Staring’, is a blank piece of paper at which artist Tom Friedman has stared repeatedly over the space of five years. The same artist is behind ‘Untitled (A Curse)’, an empty space which has been cursed by a witch. Invisible: Art about the Unseen 1957 - 2012 opens on June 12 and also includes work by John Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono, who provides instructions encouraging viewers to conjure up an artwork in their minds. ![]() ![]() And there will be an Invisible Labyrinth by Jeppe Heine, in which visitors negotiate their way around a maze wearing digital headphones activated by infra-red beams. The exhibition forms part of the Southbank Centre’s summer-long Festival Of The World with MasterCard. Mr Rugoff added: ‘From the amusing to the philosophical, you will be able to explore an invisible labyrinth that only materialises as you move around it, see an artwork that has been created by the artist staring at it for 1000 hours, walk through an installation designed to evoke the afterlife, and be in the presence of Andy Warhol’s celebrity aura.’ Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...#ixzz1vGkjBX78 |

22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms."
23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. "Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art." |

22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms." I've been trying to work out what the hidden symbology is but I can't grasp it. I think it might only become apparent from an angle you can't see from, like looking down on it from above. ![]() Given that pyramids are being included in lots of new construction here, I'm sure it has some symbolic meaning. Oh and the price? $1 million. |

I think I prefer this art by Alex Schaefer:
![]() Currently on exhibition at the Charlie James Galllery Not sure about all of it but the anti bank stuff I like. There is a PDF catalogue here. Even has a pic of a Cop taking a pic of his pic of a burning bank, which just happens to be across the street. I think his rise to fame was because he got arrested or hassled for painting the burning bank picture in public. |

The question we need to ask is: Who runs the Art Market and how did it become a freak circus? ... It was excellent read and it showed just how little i knew about the machinations of Art It also proves yet again that demise of Classical art reeks of Bagels |
