Yes, this really happened.
Old $50 bill found real, but not before bearer arrested http://www.t-g.com/story/1843748.html What officers thought was a counterfeit $50 bill turned out to be an old, legitimate bill, but the truth wasn't discovered until a man was mistakenly charged and jailed Friday. A clerk at Quik Mart, South Cannon Boulevard, notified police after the marker used to detect counterfeit bills didn't check as real. "The front side of the bill was off center and it didn't feel like a normal bill, it did look to be counterfeit," officer Brock Horner said in his report. Truth discovered After Lorenzo Gaspar was jailed, Horner showed the bill to Sgt. Bill Logue, the Shelbyville Police Department's evidence technician, who told him old legitimate bills wouldn't "check" with a marker and suggested he have it inspected at a bank. Horner took the bill to two banks, where it was determined as "real but very old" at one and proven real by a black light and magnifying glass at another. A judicial commissioner had Gaspar released from jail and Horner apologized for the arrest, the report said. Gaspar was told by Horner to take the bill to a bank and have it exchanged for a newer one. FUCK YOU!!!!!!! |

Clerks are so weird about cash anymore. I did dump some older money last year and no one questioned it.
This year I used a newer 100 and the lady at the grocery store held it up to the light, runs her marker on it and starts really looking at it. I was getting annoyed and said if you don't like that one, I can give you another one to try. She said that didn't make her feel any better . . . oh well! |

I've been a cashier before and had to do this check. For a short time I worked at a gas station and was often the only person there.
Someone asked me what I would do if it didn't pass the marker test. I hadn't really thought about it. I said, "Well I guess I'd just give it back, I mean you could have acquired it unknowingly..." (really, if they looked evil, I probably would have wrote down their plate no. when they left and thought about it) |

When i see cashiers holding up FRN's to try and verify they are 'real' i kindly tell them not to bother because it is fake. They usually look at me with a very disturbed look. I then take that opportunity to explain to them that what they are looking for to verify authenticity, is actually verifying that it is counterfeit.
I usually leave them with this quote: "Paper is not money, it is the ghost of money" - Thomas Jefferson |

My theory is that people just love to see other people get punished. We all know that LEO's act this way, but I mean the "average" person. It makes them feel better about themselves. This is why you should always keep a tight ship and tight lips. |
