What population was threaten??

Under "show more"

What the hell is wrong with these cops? They could've just captured him....
Instead they decide to pump the poor defenceless calf full of lead.

-
Police in Gatineau have come under fire for their treatment of a calf that escaped from a truck on its way to a slaughterhouse. In the incident, caught on camera, officers can be seen shooting the cow multiple times as it attempts to limp away. Const. Pierre Lanthier defending the action, saying police "have to decide if it's threatening for the population" and, in this case, determined that "they had no choice but to shoot the animal." Witness Lucille Cloutier thinks the cops should have handled the situation differently. "What I saw yesterday was the most shocking thing I've ever seen," she told CTV. "Coming from a region where our cops have tranquilizers, they didn't. This would have been the most appropriate thing for them to do." An investigation of the incident is ongoing, but Gatineau police say there are no plans to add tranquilizers to the officers' arsenal

Gatineau police defend shooting escaped cows

A YouTube video shows Gatineau police opening fire on an escaped cow Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011.

A YouTube video of Gatineau police opening fire on an escaped cow has raised questions about their treatment of the animals.

Gatineau police said two cows were headed for the slaughterhouse when they broke free from a truck Thursday, leaving them no choice but to shoot them dead.

"The cops at one point have to decide if it's threatening for the population, is it too dangerous?" said Const. Pierre Lanthier of the Gatineau police. "They decided at one point they had no choice but to shoot the animal."

In the video, police can be seen firing six shots at one cow that slowed it down, then four more causing it to limp away off-screen.

Gatineau police said they had the owner's permission to shoot the animals.
"What I saw yesterday was the most shocking thing I've ever seen," said Lucille Cloutier, who was visiting from North Bay, Ont. when the shooting happened.

"Coming from a region where our cops have tranquilizers, they didn't. This would have been the most appropriate thing for them to do."
One animal activist said police should have a better plan for dealing with escaped animals.

"One way or another there has to be responsibility for these situations," said Esther Klein, director of the Animal Defence League of Canada. "If it's going to be the police then the police need the training and tranquilizers and everything that is required to deal with this situation."

A similar situation happened last year in Ottawa involving moose that roamed too close to neighbourhoods.

"The control of animals is not ours, we are still in discussions with our partners to see who should have that, maybe the Humane Society," said Const. Marc Soucy of the Ottawa police. "It's all being looked at to see if we can have a plan."

Gatineau police say they are investigating the incident, but have no plans to arm their officers with tranquilizers at this time.

I think those cops are a threat to the general population, so why don't they shoot themselves. Fucking morons!

Revolting. It's not so much that they shot the cow, but "how" they shot it. Chicken shit MF'ers. You aren't gonna dispatch a cow by shooting it
a half dozen times in the fucking ass.

cow = an adult female

Bull = adult male

Steer = male that's been castrated.

This was a male and probably a steer that was fattened to slaughter.

Cattle get loose where I am all the time. It's not a problem for cowboys with horses and ropes.
They can be captered with four wheelers, portable corrals and a stock trailer as well.
The main danger would be if someone ran in to them if they are on a hiway.

Didn't look like there were any old country boys there that know how to drop a critter either. The meat was ruined as well. In that kind of situation it gets dark red and is pumped full of adrenalin and gets a skunky flavor that makes it inedible.

I believe that cops these days are just looking for any reason to fire their weapons. This so called police action is just totally cruel treatment by some scary people with guns... as a result the main stream media is pushing now for and end to cattle production because of the threat to public safety. 8-)

Most people are so far removed from food production now that they really don't have a clue about livestock. You can drop a critter like that with a .22lr when you know what you're doing and I have done it many times. It seems funny to me that the owner gave them permission to shoot them. I don't know why he wouldn't have tried rounding them up himself.

It does seem strange, that critter was cash on the hoof and letting the porkers kill it the way they did made the meat worthless at least for people.

Plus if the owner gave permission , if he was there why could he not handle it? If you own them by dam , you should know how to handle them!

Down here all cops know how to handle cattle + other four legged critters, cows and horses , etc, etc are getting out of fences all of the time.

What disturbs me is that no one said anything to those cops. How about "hey p u s s i e s, what the hell do you think you are doing?"

I'm surprised that steer wasn't spooked worse than it was, with all the sirens and horn blowing going on. Those idiots were probably chasin it around for an hour or more, he looked kind of tired to me.
