I wasn't really into RTF on their first go round, but I've since learned to appreciate them. A band I gig with about twice a month here in New Orleans has a few RTF tunes in their book, and they are very challenging and fun to play.
But really. "The four most talented musicians at that time in the world."?! Remember we're talking the mid seventies here. Mingus was still out there. Herbie Hancock's electric band. Miles Davis. Art Pepper. Hyperbole aside though, if I was in Vancouver and had the bucks, I'd check em out. |

Chick Corea has given us some of the deepest, most profound music in his long career and we all know 'Mr. Chameleon' can turn on a dime from profundity to vapid blandness. RTF definitely wasn't Corea's greatest moment despite the band's popularity and a fairly descent first recording on ECM with Flora, Airto, Clarke and the great Joe Farrell. After that a lot of us used to refer to the band as "Now He Sings.....Now He Sucks". Whether this concept is worth re-visiting or not will be up to those that go to the concert........great musicians which these guys obviously are, do not always make a great band or produce great music.

I always figured RTF 1.0 w. Flora, Airto, et al, was CC's stab at going commercial. "Communicate" and all that, especially from a Scientologist's perspective. Great record was Light as a Feather.
But then, CC checked out what John McLaughlin was up to and realized the latin thing was going nowhere. So he retooled RTF, canned Farrell, Airto and Flora (how about you, Fauna), hired a guitar player, and created RTF 2.0 w. Bill Connors on guitar and then 2.1 with a young Dimeola. I caught the band at the QE back in the day and was knocked out. When all was said and done, though, it was pretty derivative stuff. Then CC saw what Jarrett was up to with all that solo improv piano stuff (see Koln concert)... I was in Boston a couple of years ago, browsing through CD's when they were playing a DVD interview with CC. Had to laugh. It looked like he weighed about 300 lbs. I guess 30 years of road food will do that to you. |
