Default Gospel Music at Christmas.
If I remember correctly, gospel music is pretty thin on the ground in Vancouver. Nevertheless, I found it to be the best possible antidote to the treacly crap that gets pumped into your ears everywhere you go at this time of year. Do they still put up speakers on light poles up in Kerrisdale, so you can't escape the shit even in the street? Jesus wept.

Anyway, since I live in the midst of an embarrassment of riches of this sort here in New Orleans, I'll try not to be too smug. There were some fine practitioners of this art when I lived up there. If Marcus Mosely, Candace Churchill, or any and all of the Circle of Voices bunch are holding forth this year, do your spirit a favor and get thee to wherever they are.

I'll leave you with this quote from James Baldwin:

"THERE is no music like that music, no drama like the drama of the saints rejoicing, the sinners moaning, the tambourines racing, and all those voices coming together and crying holy unto the Lord. White Americans do not understand the depths out of which such an ironic tenacity comes but they suspect that the force is sensual. To be sensual, I think; is to respect and rejoice in the force of life, of life itself, and to be present in all that one does, from the effort of living to the breaking of bread."
