This is a very cool and funny site. It's cool checking out steve's tunes. They are very interesting. I found this clip on youtube of a trio feature for Jim Hall in the art farmer quartet. Check it out if you havn't already.

nice! terry clarke and don thompson still play with jim hall, at least terry was a year ago when i spoke with him while he was over here doing a drum clinic at malu. apparently they did a gig with jim in toronto that phil dwyer and dave holland played on as well. terry was saying how honouredd phil was to play with jim hall.

Of course I was very honoured to play with Jim, and also all the other amazing players on that gig (Don, Terry, Dave Holland, and John Handy). I guess it goes without saying that they are all giants. Mark Miller asked me what it was like to play with the group and the best answer I could come up with was that it was like waking up one day and having all your childhood dreams come true. I think the best part was just how open and generous they all are. Jim called me a couple of weeks later to talk about politics which was a thrill as well.

Back to the Swallow/Bley zone, I was looking for an obscure Carla tune and had a very amusing back-and-forth with the 'prison warden' for a while before I managed to negotiate a lead sheet from them. Very fun. It seems like a lot of Carla's tunes are only 8 or 10 bars long, but manage to pack an amazing amount of music into them. Campbell Ryga was the first one to turn me on to Carla Bley, I think I he was a fan of Steve Slagle in those days.
