Phil.
since school has been over, I've been getting up earlier to actually practice. I think it's because music school is such a drag. But, backing up your point of the traditional 'pass it along' approach to learning music: last night I sat in with PJ at his gig at the Rex, of course after a drink or two. I think I probably learned a lot more about how you're supposed to play saxophone in that ten minutes then I did all year at school. Graham. |

I had the wonderful opportunity to play with the Jim Hall Trio the other day (the group with Don Thompson and Terry Clarke). I guess it goes without saying that it was a huge thrill and honour to be on stage with those guys, and we even played Without A Song, a la 'The Bridge', which made it even more gratifying. How this pertains to the topic at hand is that during a break in the action I overhear Jim saying that during a visit to Toronto he had been invited to a jam session involving Don, Terry, and Ed Bickert. In Jim's words "it was then that I really began to question why I was bringing players up from the States when I went to Canada". Fast forward a couple of years, and the great Jim Hall Live album was released featuring Jim's new trio, which not only accompanied him in Canada but also everywhere else. Now I'm obviously not suggesting that every time you go to a jam session you are going to end up in the Jim Hall Trio, but the odds are a lot better than if you are home watching Desparate Housewives.
And Graham, did you manage to figure out how PJ gets twice as much air through his horn as anyone else? |
