Hi everybody,
I just wanted to give all of you that might be interested a heads up about an upcoming concert in the Taproom at the Granville Island Brewery and about the plan to host a series of "swing 'n' swills" throughout the year. My name is Mike Fraser and I work down at the brewery, I'm a huge jazz fan and an amateur jazz musician. Not long ago I proposed to the powers that be a night of jazz in our taproom, and I was pleased to receive alot of support for the event which didn't actually come as a surprise as we have been long time supporters of the festival. The first event is taking place on Sat. March 6th with the opening band "Panopticon" starting at 8:30. These three young cats all have bright futures on their respective instruments, Tom Wherret- guitar, Michael Patterson- bass and Richard Graham-drums. Then we turn over the remainder of the night to the Terry Deane Quartet featuring Terry on tenor sax, Brad Turner- fender rhodes, Adam Thomas- bass and the hard swingin' and sharp dressin' Jesse Cahill- drums. Reading through the thread talking about the visible lack of students at gigs around town I couldn't agree more. I always shook my head at how few familiar faces would come out to "must see" concerts at the Cellar or elsewhere around town. I know I spent about half my student loan on live music, cd's, trips to jazz alley in Seattle and other listening adventures. I'm hoping to see alot of students coming out for this event (come on kids, there'll be lots of cold beer!) and we would like to hire some of the better student ensembles to open up at future events. This should be a great night for all and if well supported could turn into an exciting new and much needed venue for jazz in this city. The acoustics are great, the atmosphere is hip and the beers not bad either! Tickets are $12/$10 for students and will be sold at the door. If you have any questions, comments or ideas please contact me through this site or phone me at 604-338-5549. Cheers! |
