The sdame astronomer that discovered Planet Sedna a couple of years ago (the one about 3/4 the size of pluto but with a super long and skewed oval orbit) has discovered another, bigger, body outside the orbit of Pluto. This one is actually about the same size as Pluto.
Here is an article about the discovery (you'll need to sign up for free at the New York Times to read it): http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08...8hpib |

well there are different requirements for it to be a planet. it has to have some sort of orbit around the sun, and maybe some features of some other planets. its very hard to tell if these rocky objects are planets or not. they could just (and probably are) asteroids that just strayed away from the kuiper belt. of course it would be easy to tell if its a planet if it was jovial but its too far from the sun for a gas planet to last out there. but once the planet is confirmed a planet, the founder usually names the planet as he chooses. in the most recent case, the dude named his planet xena, in name of the warrior princess. go figure.

They do, but we can never get Naga and the klingons to respond. |

Quote, originally posted by Reppu »Did you know that some theories speak of a missing planet? A planet that was in orbit where the asteroids belt is today, between Mars an Jupiter. That missing planet is often called Phaeton.
Most astronomers agree that there is not enough material in the asteroid belt to make up a planet. No one is sure for the reason of the belts existance, but it is believed to be either the remanants of a moon or debry left over from the formation of the solar system that has been herded into place, in part due to Jupiter's gravitation. Sorry I was an uber astronomy geek growing up. |
