From a GMA (Good morning America) newsclip I saw today, nearly all of the wild animals survived. They speculated that they had the six sense of it coming.

The Red Cross is estimating a total of 100,000 died in the quake and the Tsunami that followed. I also believe numbers will rise to that level.
A 1000 German's are still missing, 1000 Sweeds, 100's of Norway, 30 Belgians,... This truly is an international disaster.

Yes it is, there were over 1000 tourists from Finland there in Thailand and other countries
14 finnish people is reported dead and almoust 263 more is officially reported missing. and they say its most likely that oll of those missing persons are dead. over 700 people has came back to Finland and Finnair is convertig one of their planes to ambulanceplane and sending it to pick up those most injured finnish tourists.
300 tourists have reported via sms that they are OK, and finnish phone-operators are trying to track the phones of those who are still missing.

Same in Belgium. 5 persons are now confirmed dead, and from the list of 30 people missing in hotels, 21 have been found allive now. So 9 are still missing
But there are also some 250 Belgians traveling by backpack in the area, and they haven't been able to find any of them for now. They fear is dozens of them are never going to be found alive.
the toll now stands at more than 120,000 dead, they reached a village for the first time where they found 23,000 bodies.

Absolutely amazing......this is a modern day black death (though not as bad in terms of lost life). Good to see that differences over other happenings (Iraq comes to mind) are being set aside so that we can get aid to these poor people as soon as possible.

Not really, the EU isn't that slow as sometimes it appears to be.
Even the day before yesterday, before the coalition, the European commissioner of developement ( Jean Louis Michel ) asked for an international Donorconvention for the region.
Nonetheless, it isn't that hard for Bush to contact the EU as a whole, we have a parliament and commision for these things. But for now it appears there wasn't even a question of that kind. I find that strange.

The thing that amazes me is that Bangladesh had so few casualties. Cyclones caused floods in 1970 and '91 that killed more people in just that one low-lying country than have so far been cofirmed dead due to this catastrophe in the whole region.

Last check at a newspaper site it said:
80,600 people have already died in this disaster.
(of which more than 45,000 in Indonesia)

If this had happened in the Pacific Ocean, less destruction would've happen (they, in fact, do have the detection tools you spoke about, because it happens very often in the Pacifics). But, unfortuantely, these kinds of things rarely happen in the India Ocean and they don't have the detection tools so nothing could've been done to prevent less destruction - heard this on a news report.
I was speechless when I heard/saw this...
A tragic event, to say the least...prayers go out to everyone who were (are still) affected by the devastation

My guess is that Europe has to do a joint EU thing before it joins any other coalition. They'll have to get together, have meetings, vote yada yada yada.

an earthquake of 9.0 on the richter scale. Wow. There were people who were at sea and said they couldnt feel anything. The waves were ripples but as they got closer to shore, they got bigger. 32 feet. There were reports of the water moving up to 600 miles per hour

Bali is on the opposite side of Indonesia. I severely doubt they would have had any damage.
