[QUOTE=tinomen;1604585]
The first alternative band, and the only people other than U2 in the 80's that played anything with any semblance of Rock... /quote]

No, not at all, to either of these assertions.
Yes, yes totally. Just as nirvana was the 1st grunge band, because they made it first, even though other bands had a similar sound. REM was 1st "alternative" band to make it, and create an "alternative" category. It did not exist before them. It was called "College Rock".

Look at bands in the 90's and see who they cite as an influence. The most influential band of the 90's, Nirvana cites them as an influence. They were 'The' college rock band in the mid 80's, and their influence is much like that of the pixies or sonic youth...neither of which are hit makers... they were what other bands listened to.

I'm sure you will tell me how the pixies and sonic youth were also not influential, at which point your credibility will be ****.

My credibility is fine, I simply do not agree that to be labled as "the first" one must be a "hit maker", especially considering how bad pop music sucks.

The facts are other bands certainly laid the trail long before their pop culture equivalents arrived on the scene.

Categories are for boring people anyway though.

Let me put this in a perspective you might understand. The category "Alternative Rock" did not exist until REM. No one else was labeling themselves or being labeled by someone else. REM was the 1st. Sure, there have been people playing in alternative tune ranges before them... but they were the first to actually make it sound good, where people liked them and the term spread because of them.

What you seem to be saying is, because the Kinks wrote the 1st punk songs, in the 60's, they are the 1st punk band... when in reality, they just have a couple of punk songs and are in no way a punk band.

Is this where you pull an acupuncture and say something you think sounds lofty when in reality it is asinine? The brain categorizes for a reason. Or did you not just say all pop music sucks?

U2 is not the kind of music I usually listen to, but I like some of their stuff. Either way, I got to see them play in Pittsburgh in July on one of the last 360 tour dates, and it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. I have seen hundreds of bands play live, but they really know how it's done, I respect them for that. Excellent live show.

Yes, REM are a good band and they do have a albums which are and will always be relevant.

I like them as well, but they haven't released a decent album in 30 years.

And I just can't understand peoples' fascination with the categorization and labeling of all of modern music.

It's senseless and useless and does nothing to shine a light on the actual music.

That makes all this musical twaddle about who was first and in what genre etc even more ridiculous.

You amaze me.

I'd place money on that being the only REM song you've heard.

Wrong, itīs one of the few songs i wish i never heard

edit: you know thinking about your comment, how in the hell could you think Shiny happy people is more "known" than letīs say "Everybody hurts", "Man on the Moon", "Losing my religion" or "It's the End of the World" ?

My sister gave me a cassette of Automatic for the People when I was 5 or 6 and I must have listened to it a thousand times. First band I remember really loving.

Not a huge fan, but I have Out of Time, which is pretty good. I can see how people appreciate them.

They hadn't released any albums 30 years ago, or are you saying none of their albums are decent as a whole? Last great album was probably New Adventures...

So basically your exposure to the band is a greatest hits disc ?

Every song you mentioned also come from some of their albums which they started releasing in the early nineties.

I hit 3 instead of 2 by mistake.

20 years not 30. I don't like them in the 90's onwards but I need to listen to the discography again as I haven't in quite a while.

Those happen to be my more favoured albums though so it's all personal preference. GF's preference is actually that he hates everything, and rather than say nothing, he want's to shout about it as much as possible. In other words, there's no point arguing or trying to persuade otherwise.

I won't say anymore because I need to listen again and then talk. Last time I listened to them properly was 8 years ago when I was a 19 year old hooked on Led Zeppelin.

Playing Murmur right now...

I remember once being at a bbq some 5 years ago and playing some songs from Murmur and Reckoning. People started complaining that it's crap and I had to change it.

5 minutes later some guy started playing Shiny Happy People and Losing my religion and everybody went ecstatic.

They had no idea at all that all the songs I played were also from REM.

No, actually iīve heard a few of their cdīs, not just the "hits",
Where do you get the notion from that my exposure to REM just exists of the top ten hits iīve mentioned when my response was clearly trying to say there are more known songs then Shiny happy people ? Did you even read the post i was responding to ?
I find the "OMG he doesnīt like REM, He apperently doesnīt know all of their songs, or is in some other way uneducated about the bands greatness"-notion very funny.

@Kyros

Actually thatīs not true at all, i like alot of things, and i barely ever shout.
Also the times i say something positive about whatever it may be, it mainly goīs unnoticed where the negative touched posts turn out more entertaining.
btw i also dislike U2, Nickelback and never liked Nirvana, so yeah

Ok sorry then but please don't equate me with a fan whose got their panties in a twist.

I'm not a fan of any band and never will be.

And anyway, hearing "a few of their cd's" is not enough to build a proper opinion about a band.
