Default Best store to buy a camera from in the US?
I fancy a dSLR camera and I was wondering what the best place (not online) is. I can get a D5100 for about £500 in British money from Target which is a good price, but is there anywhere better than there to look for deals?

What part of the USA are you in? The brands of stores greatly varies from region to region.

If you're in New York- everywhere.

Otherwise:
Frys has a nice selection (and a huge Sony Alpha isle).
Best Buy isn't bad.
Ritz Camera exists, don't know much more then that.

I'll be in Denver and Las Vegas. Obviously buying on the strip is out as everything is a lot more expensive.

What you meant to say is that if you're in New York, buy at B&H.

True, but unlike everywhere else in the US there are alternatives like J&R, Adorama, Phil's Discount Camera and Cheesesteaks.

The price can only go so low from a "legit" retailer. If you decide to go with the D5100 buy just the body only and pick up a good lens. The kit lens is alright but for a short focal length you are better off with something like a 35mm F/1.8 prime lens for landscapes ( http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...mm_f_1_8G.html ) and a 55-200mm for telephoto ( http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...om_Nikkor.html ).

I got the D3100 two weeks ago with the 18-55mm kit lens and also picked up a refurb 55-200mm. My next lens will be the 35mm prime (35X1.5 = 52.5mm on a crop body camera like the 3100 and 5100). Dont expect to take indoor sports photos with the 55-200. For stuff like that you really need the 70-200 F/2.8 but that lens is $2100.

Sorry, what I means was are Target sensibly priced. I know the price can only go so low, but it never seems to have a limit on how high it will go.

You will pay a significantly higher price buying in the store versus online in the US.

Oh ok I gotcha. Actually target is having a camera sale right now. Problem is they want $799 plus tax for the D5100 and 18-55 kit lens. B&H wants $759. BestBuy might be your best bet. They want the same price as B&H plus tax of course.

True, but it's still a saving over OK prices (in most cases) to buy in-store and I don't have a US address for them to ship to.

So does ABC warehouse if they still offer cameras.

Your best bet imo, is to skip buying from a store, since it seems you already know what you want. Whatever hotel you are staying at, order it a week in advance and have it delivered to the hotel. You will spend on shipping... but not near as much as you will save by skipping sales tax and the b&m markup. I have done this before, it isn't a problem. Just remember to call the hotel and tell them to expect a package for you.

Second. Though Adorama is an excellent store too, especially if you don't want to deal with the crowds and byzantine checkout process.

It's an option. Although a lot of US web stores won't take a UK credit card number I believe.

I bet if you called them and explained your situation they would. They won't let a $500-$800 sale go unless they have a legitimate reason to.
