I shall rephrase that....

I wonder how much apple have invested in cancer research.
I'm sure you've known relatives or friends who have struggled with cancer. How much did they "plough" into cancer research?

I think people are taking what he is saying out of context. I think he's saying that people don't care much about research for things like cancer until it effects them.

These same pictures (or very similar ones) floated around in 2009 when he took a leave of absence. I don't believe that to be Jobs.

I help fund Parkinson's research so that in the slim chance that I contract the disease in the future I will feel good about myself for having done so!

Seriously. It is unrealistic to expect everyone to care passionately about every cause or charity. The most serious diseases and calamities will warrant the most significant responses precisely because it affects the most people, and so it will generate the greatest amount of activism amongst the populace, those especially affected personally in some manner, who will then have greater reason to contribute to finding a cure for the disease.

Then that just shows how generally shallow people are then doesn't it.

That's not Steve Jobs.

It is him. He is terminally ill with pancreatic cancer, it was only a matter of time, in fact he's done well to last as long as he did. Going by how he looks and how i remember my wifes mother looking, i don't think he has long left. That said, the Macmillan nurses kept telling us she wouldn't make it through the week, but in the end she lasted 9 months, couldn't stand, see, drink, eat or even sit up at the end. So he may have a little while yet.

Jeez, looks like my Grandad a few months before he died of cancer....
It's certainly a look all cancer sufferers seem to share, you certainly never forget it. The shocking thing is how it appears to age the person dramatically, they look 20-30yrs older than they are.

So do you give money to ever single medical charity in the entire world? I doubt it.

All you people saying "It's him", how do you know it's him?

Surprise surprise; pictures could be fake!

And you people are talking like he's stepped down from any business activity completely. He's still Chairman remember.

He's nothing more than a mascot now. What you are seeing is the progression of his disease, he managed to slow it down, but there is no stopping it. He had a liver transplant, because the disease had spread to his other organs, but once it's got to that point, there isn't much you can do, it's just a matter of time. Just take a look at this video for example.

Those trying to debunk the photo just have no idea what it does to a person and have no experience with the disease. They obviously can't accept that he's dying. But he has been terminally ill with pancreatic cancer for some time now, it was always going to happen.

The final week, I didn't even recognise my granddad. He had lost so much weight and looked so ill it didn't even look like him any more.

Its an eye opener, to say the least.

I don't blame society for the natural compulsion to document things. I do however blame the media for using images like this to sell magazines. We all know he's dying. Do we need to see photos of him in a decimated condition on a magazine spread to boost sales? Just seems very wrong to me.
You're a bit new to how tabloid media works, aren't you.

The aren't fake Bungle from what i've seen. They were taken at his home it would appear. You can see elements where they were taken at his home on Google Street view. The Lexus he is standing near is on the street on Google maps and the background matches his driveway.

I do find it totally abhorrant that a dying man has been treated in such a way.

I'm struggling to understand what your point is....As far as I can tell it's that people don't think about a particular disease until it affects them. So?

I would count someone they know having it as it affecting them.

Most people don't want think about terrible diseases like Cancer or HIV, and understandably so, who wants to burden themselves with such depressing thoughts? We all have our own problems we have to deal with and shouldn't be made to feel guilty for not wanting to understand these things, many of us will eventually experience it anyway, directly or indirectly, whether we want to or not.

That's why sometimes having something like this publicized can be a good thing, it brings such matters to the attention of many people who may never have otherwise stopped to think about these things. But rather than feeling bad or guilty that they don't or haven't, it should be a chance to learn and perhaps feel compassion for a fellow human who is going through hell, keeping in mind that it could eventually happen to you or someone you love.

Great post, I have lost many family members to cancer. The more awareness the better, my Aunt had bowel cancer which currently is almost incurable. If she had an option to detect it earlier, she may well have survived. The exposure that famous people get when they are ill, can only serve to increase awareness in the long term.

How many times do we have to look at pictures of an old man in a wheelchair who looks a little bit like Steve Jobs?
