So, the receiver doesn't pay for it because the sender subsidises the receiver's costs? FFS, that's what we've been saying, the receiving person doesn't pay, the sender does! [rolleyes]
I said nothing about it being a "better deal" as far as total costs - but that it's fairer because one isn't paying for receiving calls or texts one may not wish to receive, only those that one initiates.
No you block head. Phone calls aren't always going in one direction. You must surely understand the concept of subsidised and hidden costs?

EVERYONE making a calls pays towards the cost of EVERYONE receiving calls. It's forced on you. No exceptions. In the US they don't hide the charge for receiving calls. Essentially the revenue stream is the same.

OK, some of you don't get it.

You're in the US, you have a contract for 200 minutes and 500 texts, OK?
You receive 300 minutes of calls and 1000 texts - so you're over by 100 minutes and 500 texts = $$$
In the UK, and here, you'd still have 200 minutes of calls and 500 texts* credit - it's the party(ies) that called or texted* that lose their credit for them.

*I'll have to double check that with my niece (she's a high text user - but the adverts do say "send" xxx texts) as I use a pre-paid and very rarely send or receive texts - I prefer to speak to the person. Certainly the calls part is correct here.
In the US, that 200/500 contract would probably cost half as much, or in fact it would be more like 400/1000.

As DM says' the total revenue is still there, it's just done in a way that doesn't allow people to receive for nothing.

Hmm, I've never seen this issue. All the people I know pay the $5-$10 for the unlimited MMS/SMS.
On Sprint, Verizon and AT&T, unlimited is $20. Maybe you guys have a lot of small local carriers?

Nevertheless, carriers gouge the heck out of SMS plans.

You need to get your head around what's fair and what isn't.

There isn't anything unfair about paying to receive texts or calls. You pay to receive internet or tv for example. You're in control over when you pick up the phone. I do understand the point you're making, but it doesnt really matter.

So, if a junk advertiser decided to send you "xxx" advertising texts or 'phone calls, it's fair that you have to pay to receive these unsolicited messages?
Give me a break, [rofl]

I don't sign up for advertising texts. I've only ever got them from Vodafone. Again, it's you're choice.

I think I'd be better of with the American system as I make more calls than I receive because I tend to call banks, and businesses and they don't often call me. So is that unfair?

He lets the last Hungarian go. He waits until his wife and kids are in the ground and then he goes after the rest of the mob. He kills their kids, he kills their wives, he kills their parents and their parents' friends. He burns down the houses they live in and the stores they work in, he kills people that owe them money. And like that he was gone. Underground. Nobody has ever seen him since. He becomes a myth, a spook story that criminals tell their kids at night. "Rat on your pop, and GolemFrost will get you." And no-one ever really believes.

You would, indeed, be better of.
Many businesses also have 0800 (that's the free call prefix down here) numbers - I make a point of using them when I can - esp' when using the cell phone.
May be worth making a list of your most frequently called businesses', etc, free call numbers where available and using them.

I wasn't responding to you... if you were straight you may have realised that it was a hypothetical question, anyway.

Another case of: "I have not experienced it so it does not happen" by EaG.

Maybe, one day, when you have your own credit card and can buy things online, you will put your cell phone number as contact information and accidentally opt into phone solicitations.

This happens.

Also, Origin raped me once.

I have more than one credit card and buy a ton of **** online. No one has ever called me.

Your evidence has about the same level of credibility as mine. I.e. Anecdotal. So suck it.

No.

It has never happened to you, so you said: Cell phones here get NO advertising message or unsolicited calls. No, implies 0%, as in never.

It has happened to me, that is a fact, not an opinion. Therefore, it does happen.
