That coast has a bit of a history with earthquakes, they're not that unusual - good to see that there seems to be little damage or injuries.
I've lived about half my life in earthquake zones and they can be quite scary while you're woiting to see it it's just a tremor or building into a good shake. [edit] Quite shallow at 6km, makes the surface affect a lot stronger... "The agency said the quake was 3.7 miles beneath the surface, but scientists said they may never be able to map the exact fault. Aftershocks may help to outline it, said Rowena Lohman, a seismologist at Cornell University. There have been a few aftershocks. Two were magnitudes 2.2 and 2.8 but a later one measured 4.8. The last quake of equal power to strike the East Coast was in New York in 1944. The largest East Coast quake on record was a 7.3 that hit South Carolina in 1886. In 1897, a magnitude-5.9 quake was recorded at Giles County, Va., the largest on record in that state." Seems the West coast isn't that sympathetic about it "On the West Coast, where the last major quake to strike a metro area was a magnitude-6.7 event that ravaged greater Los Angeles in 1994, what happened back East was cause for outright mockery. "Californians yawn, shrug and go back to their iced lattes," Marcus Beer, who reviews video games for a local news broadcaster, said in a Twitter post." |

the rock in Cali is young and more broken down while the east coast is a more solid/cold rock thats why the 5.8 that was centered in VA was felt all the way to NY. The rock here on the east coast is more solid and a 5.8 feels scary here while a 5.8 in cali is less violent. Plus let us not forget in california you are taught what to do in an EQ and have come to live with/accept them while on the east coast everyone thought something hit the building or the wind was making the windows vibrate. We dont expect earthquakes here.
