I felt it at work... the whole building was shaking and I could feel the ground underneath me moving. My first earthquake ever! We are about 400 miles away or so.

5.9... Our whole building was swaying... approx 110 miles north-northeast of it. Lasted about a minute, no real damage except for a monitor that fell off my desk. [cursing]

The building I was working in was temporarily shut down.

Seems like there is some kind of issue at JFK airport.

EDIT: The New York police commissioner, Raymond Kelly, was in a meeting with top deputies planning security for the upcoming anniversary when the shaking started. Workers in the Empire State Building spilled into the streets, some having descended dozens of flights of stairs.

"I thought we'd been hit by an airplane," said one worker, Marty Wiesner. There are some really stupid people in this world.

I have a feeling it won't be the last time either. There has been plenty of crazy going on in the world for quite some time now.

It's odd, people I know felt it just North of me and reports are coming in just West of me, but I felt nothing at all here in RI.

Granted, I do live on an island, but it's not very far from the mainland. They are saying the solid bedrock underneath is what transmitted the quake so far Northward. Bedrock must not be as solid near the coast.

Last year there was an EQ in my hometown Gathersburg right when i woke up (30 miles from dc) and today while I was working in DC I felt it.. **** was falling off my bookshelf in the office (clumsily stacked loose sheets of paper)... My aunt had a few dishes fall off her china cabinet. It was intense. 2nd earth quake in 1 year.

Even a bunch of people here in Pittsburgh felt it a bit. I unfortunately, did not notice it at all.

Seen someone make a comment about MSNBC reporting that the Washington Monument is now leaning left, while Fox News insists it's leaning to the right. [rofl]

I was really confused as to what was goin on. I was just watchin tv and then everything started shaking. Thought my house got hit by a car since it has been hit by a car before and that's what it felt sorta like..... minus all the noise and screaming...
