I think it was more for safety if you break down on the Dalton, I believe it's grizzly country no? there's 240 miles of it with no services at all. I think I'd feel safer with a gun. I'll try and find the link to show you, so you can see if you think it's legit as I know you know alot about stuff.
Go in to a Wall Mart and get your self a 12guage shotgun. As far as i know you have to be 18 years old to buy one with no gun license.

Or get some flare guns.

If your car does break down in the middle of no where. Are you going to fix it with rocks and pine cones??

No you need to wait on a passing truck, most of which won't stop as it takes alot of fuel to come to rest, stop and get going again. Or use a satellite phone to call in for help.

I guess I'm just being a big gaylord wanting to take a gun on a 400 mile stretch of treacherous road with barely any services and alot of wild animals that can potentially eat me.

Protection against a 1000 pound grizzly bear wanting to eat you alive because he is starved. I own many hunting guns and a large bear will laugh at somebody with a can of mace as he eats you. For a situation like that I would have my 7mm remington magnum with me. A shotgun wont do much but sting him unless you are loaded with slugs. A large pistol would also work short range. It would also allow him to take down an animal for food if for some reason he got lost in the wilderness. When it comes to alaska you better go prepared because if not you very well could become a statistic.

This is pretty much why I asked. If you break down in the Dalton you could be there for quite some time in your vehicle before being rescued, not to mention there's a lot of stretches of road where people come off it, especially in the winter, which is when we are going. Any site I read about it recommends at least 3 spare tyres, spare fuel and lots of supplies to eat and drink. It's regarded as the most dangerous road in north America with the longest stretch between any kind of services. And it is grizzly country. It's amazing me that the yanks here are suggesting mace instead of a gun.

Agreed. The only thing you might want a gun for is protection from wild animals. Even then you could just get some bear mace, which you don't need a license to carry or use.
The black bears by me shrug off bear mace like it's baby shampoo.

Blah blah whatevers. It's always "X country" somewhere in the US. For example, never stop when you're close to Las Vegas because it's bat country.

Make sure you are not driving a convertible.

Get a Van and weld bars on all the windows for protection. Mount a harpoon on the roof.

Wait... why are you driving on this so called scary road and not flying or taking a train??

There are small planes that you can charter in Alaska. 4-5 passenger planes the kind that land on water and snow, they have floats.

edit;

These guys will take you almost anywhere.

You were just giving props to Lazerbase for taking life by the horns in the tent thread.

I am confused.

Getting eaten by 1000lb bear or climbing a mountain? Hmmm...

And i was asking why he is driving on that road. We dont know if is going to camp along the road and share his picnic basket with the local wild life. Its a legitimate question.

There are far less plane accidents or plane break downs then car accidents or car breakdowns.

If the engine stalls on a plane, you still have time and distance to glide it to a safe area. Plus everyone in Alaska has a gun or five, even pilots. Plus planes get highest priority if it breaks down and crash lands some where in the middle of no where vs a car breakdown. Unless you are US president and your car breaks down. But then you have a convoy of 5 cars and trunks loaded with enough firepower to start a small war.

Even assuming it was an engine failure, rather than another failure, the aircraft still has to find a safe area to land - that means possibly quite long and flat - not a lot of that about in those parts of the world.
Even if the people on board are relatively unhurt, they still have to stay alive long enough for rescue - that's not a given as a small aircraft can be very hard to spot, even if there isn't a snowfall.
That's another point, if the weather turns bad, in an aircraft, you're in big trouble, whereas in a vehicle it isn't that much of a problem, unless it gets quite deep.

In either case, a firearm is a basic safety tool, along with spare belts (and tools to change them), snow shovels and chains, flares, food (which will attract bears), water, small stove and spare fuel, etc.
Better to plan for the worst and not need it than need it and not have it.
