Buy a black power rifle (not making a joke here) because I know you can buy them at 18 and without any particular registration. They've come quite a long way too technologically.

If not then a couple of road flares and air horns should scare off most bears, if that fails then just make sure you're standing behind your old man.

Okay here's the story. My father and I were looking into doing an Arctic cruise up through Greenland to an island called Axel Heiberg. As a young man he worked in the merchant navy and worked on an icebreaker that delivered equipment to this island to set up a science laboratory and deliver other goods to the small inuit population.

However, the cruise turned out to be around £14,000 each (yes, I know) and we just can't afford it. So we decided we're going to drive across Alaska. We both watch Ice Road Truckers and were fascinated by the Dalton Highway which goes from Fairbanks all the way up to a place called Deadhorse on the coast of the arctic ocean.

Now this is where the story gets quite strange, I am fascinated by polar bears and am a keen photographer and I came across this film called Ice Bears Of The Beaufort. I contacted the film makers to see if they were ever showing the film in Scotland and they said 'no' and that they had no plans to release it on DVD/Blu Ray. Then she said if I was ever in northern Alaska I should come and visit them on Barter Island and they'll give me a private viewing!!!

One of the few ways to get to Barter is to drive to Deadhorse along the Dalton and take a small aircraft from there.

So there you have it, that's why I'm going and that's why I'm asking. It's all in the spirit of adventure and to give me and my father a good excuse to go and do something different, challenging and interesting.

Cheers for the info my man. Yeah I must admit I figured airhorns would do the job too, but a gun would just feel alot safer. Maybe I'm being over-cautious, I have no idea. Hence the asking for advice.

Just remember with a black powder gun you have one shot so you better make it count! I have a couple of them myself and they are my favorite gun to hunt with (deer).

Took this with my black powder gun. Just got the mount back a couple days ago.
