I can guarantee it is 100% genuine, one of my friends is good friends with the film makers of Catfish. : )

Exit Through the Giftshop is brilliant, and is again questionably authentic, but then that's what Banksy is all about. 'f**kin with ya mind man!'

Spoilers:-

Well I've no reason not to believe you but I immediately thought it was a little suspicious, especially since the lead was such an overly photogenic chap. They all seemed to be fairly intelligent lads but it took them a while to even act suspicious despite every photo that was posted looking like a modelling shot, not your typical FB fair.

I also felt they needed to up the sympathy factor at the end otherwise it would be more akin to a post on 4-chan rather than a documentary.

I'm skeptical.

That's like saying my cousins cousin....it's still second hand information that your friend could have invented.

I'm just stirring, I have not watched catfish, nor am I likely too.

Ah, my first Dangermoose reply of 2011, I see you're going for a radically different style this year. [yawn]

Why change a winning formula?

Okay, my friend is a music producer in NY and lived with Nev Schulman for a year. I can confirm this to be true as she has loads of pictures of them together on Facebook. The 3 guys in the film are life long friends and have filmed each other's lives since they were kids. This story randomly unfolded and amazingly had the ending that it does. They didn't expect or manipulate it at all.

I have quite a few friends on Facebook (generally female) who's profile pics look like a modeling portfolio, so that doesn't really stand as evidence for me.

Anyhoo, I guess haters gonna hate. I really liked the film, probably because I knew absolutely nothing about it at all until I watched it. It wasn't until after I posted it on Facebook that I learned my friend lived with the dude. Small world indeed.

True, it is spectacularly successful.

A Family of models with model photographs, not a single non posed shot?

And while I believe your friend, if this film were fabricated nobody would be told otherwise since it would jeopardise potential sales and subtract from the audience reaction.

I'll go with my instinct on this, I'm not a hater, I thought it rather interesting if not a little drawn out in places but I'm just too cynical to believe it played out as shown.

Everything is edited for effect, rhythm of story etc. It's whether or not you believe that the events are suitably close to the truth or not that matters.
