A lady just collected her machine, sadly the fault was so intermittant we weren't able to track it down. As she was leaving she got out a piece of paper with a PCWorld Packard Bell system spec and price on it. Scrawled next to the £399 price was £299 SPECIALL!! in Biro (yes, 2 L's).
Cust: "Can you match that price?" Me: "hmmm.. well, possibly. I'd need to check the price of the relative parts." Cust: "They were going to give us Microsoft office and a free monitor too." Me: "In that case no, I doubt anyone would offer a system at that price with that spec and throw in £200 worth of extras free." Cust: "So you're not going to match it?" Me: "No, sorry" Cust: "Well I think trading standards would be interested to hear about that since you say you'll match any price." Me: "Well, firstly, we say we'll match any "Local Independants" price, so PC world and Internet shops don't apply. Secondly it's Consumer Direct now. Thirdly we are under no obligation to sell anything to anyone and are perfectly entitled to refuse service to anyone we wish. Finally, we do not price match without a quote or similar document outlaying everything that's been offered." Cust: *stares blankly* "So you're not going to match it?" Me: "No" Cust: "I'll go and buy it from them!" Me: "OK" Cust: "I will, it's a really good deal." Me: "I agree." Cust: *Silence* Me: "Anything else I can help you with?" Cust: "Do you have a price list?" I'd have been a little more subtle but I feel like arse today so I'm not very patient. |

I had an experience when I was working in a pc repair shop when I was like 20-21...
This Arab dude on Wisconsin Ave (DC) parks in his brand new 7 series right in front of the store. Brings in his toshiba (we were a toshiba sponsored repair center) and right off the bat the screen was cracked in half with no image. He said that he came due to his pc malfunctioning/poor performance. He claims he works on his laptop by using the external video port with a monitor. I said sir the screen is broken but he said not to worry about it... I write of a ticket for him stating the obvious damages and have him sign it... Called him 3 days later telling him I cleaned out his machine using anti virus software and other tools and its fine now. He comes in... Customer: Vat is dis? My screen is broken! I did not leave it here with a broken screen.... Me: ?!? Excuse me? It states here that it was broken on the ticket and you signed it... Customer: Not my signature! Me: I will be right back. I go to my boss who is an Arab and tell him what this ******* is trying to pull.. He stops eating his lunch comes out front and starts yelling in Arabic and the guy yells back and then he just leaves with the laptop in his 7 series. My boss said forget about his charge. |

Why not just say, "We didn't do business with liars who tried to defraud our business - and there's the door!"?
Have you thought about putting some money into the business, then you can ask if they want to speak to an owner before telling them you are one and they can frig off? If you haven't done so, READ THIS http://www.actsofgord.com/ |

Haha, that's hilarious!
Some people will do anything to get a discount on something. The worst part is: they make everybody's elses life a living hell in the process. It's such selfish behaviour. On the flip side, there is a computer store near to where I live run by these 2 Chinese blokes, and they are way overpriced, and probably know less than my grandmother about computers. The only customers they get are people who don't know any better. I love walking in there, with my GENUINE price lists in hand and asking something like: "How much can you do the Logitech M950 mouse for" (true story). They then punch in a few make-believe numbers into their make-believe internet browser, and come back with: "ummm, $240 dollar, best price". Now, this mouse sells for $100-120 in most other stores, including big commercial chain stores. I ask why so much and they say: "Special mouse, super amazing, very expensive, special order!" I show them the price lists and explain it's not that "special", and they tell me I am trying to rip THEM off! My usual reply is: "Forget about it, I will be back next week for my next dose of entertainment, thank you!" |

I think you dealt with that quite well. You let the customer know she's free to do what she likes. Even though the Packard Bell is most likely going to be a turd, hey why argue the point, the customer is always right, and if she thinks it's such a brilliant deal then why argue any further.
Now just remember her face and 12 months from now you'll see her back complaining that you let her buy that hunk of junk and that you must fix it for free. [rofl] |
