I know that they plan to switch to LTE. Phasing out is different to turning it all off tomorrow.
Verizon have so much CDMA infrastructure to fall back on that it isn't going anywhere soon. [yes]
Verizon has already started their LTE installations. 10 major cities are supposed to be running it by years end. Verizon's LTE implementation is only for data though. They won't be using it for voice for a while yet. I'm hoping it's sooner rather than later though.

I heard from a sprint rep that a good portion of Michigan is supposed to be 4g by march of next year (including my area)!

Once you hit that bridge though, you have no reception with Sprint or Nextel. I would love even having 3g in my area. AT&T has it about 2 hours south so it is getting closer. By the time Verizon rolls out LTE nationwide AT&T just might have 3g up here lol.
